  2. Chemical Reactions • A chemical reaction happens when a chemical change takes place. • Chemical reactions happen so atoms can get a full set of valence electrons and become more stable.

  3. Chemical Equations A chemical equation represents a chemical reaction where the reactants and products are expressed as formulas. Reactant  Products Reactants: The substances that undergo a change in a chemical reaction. Products: The new substances that are a result of a Chemical Reactions.

  4. Chemical Equations Cont. Chemical equations are used to make reading, writing, and understanding chemical equations easier. The arrow, , used in chemical equations stand for “yields” or “form”.

  5. Synthesis Reaction • A reaction where two or more substances react to form a single substance. • Reactants may be either elements or compounds. • Product synthesized is always a compound. Equation: A+B  AB Analogy: Chocolate chips + Cookie dough Chocolate chip cookie dough Example: Mg + O  MgO

  6. Decomposition Reaction • Where a compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances • Reactant is always a compound. • Products may be elements or compounds. Equation: AB  A + B Analogy: Couple  Boy + Girl Example: H2O  H2 + O

  7. Single Displacement • A reaction in which one element takes the place of another element in a compound. Equation: A+BC B+AC Analogy: Peanut butter + Jelly  Peanut butter + Marshmallow Example: Cu + 2AgNO3 2Ag + Cu(NO3)2

  8. Double Displacement • A reaction in which two different compounds exchange positive ions and form new compounds. Equation: AB+CD  AD+CB Analogy: Swingers Example: H2O + MgClMgO + H2Cl Picture Not Appropriate for School!
