  1. Web 2.0 Tools Nibble Conference October 1, 2010 Holly Forsyth

  2. What is Web 2.0? Heck...what is Web 1.0? Web 2.0 tools are those tools that live online but are interactive for the user. They involve 2-way communication, with sharing and collaborating. Examples: blogging, wikis, email, interactive websites that involve sharing with others such as Delicious, VoiceThread etc. Web 1.0 tools are those that live online but the student is merely a consumer, in which the communication is only 1-way and no interaction. Examples: Static web sites that you retrieve information from such as World Book online, our own FLB Web page etc.

  3. What is my criteria for choosing some of the apps that I am going to share with you? • Free!! Let's face it...we're teachers...we love free. • They are web applications--they live and are accessed via the web, and not on your hard drive. • Easy to learn! If they are easy enough for this "old dog" to learn the tricks, you all will be fine. • Must be useful tools for teaching and learning the curricula. These can not just be an exercise in "playing" on the web, but the goal is to better support learning by infusing the technology. It must be the right tool at the right time.

  4. There is only 1 web address that you will have to remember today and it is linked to my page on the FLB site under the staff services tab: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment: all links used today can be found there: www.curriculuminstructionassessment.wikispaces.com

  5. Types of Applications:Google--I use all of the apps in Google-gmail, sharing documents, powerpoints etc. https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount?service=mail&continue=http%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2Fe-11-10f3bbf2c4349ed8e10b7ea840964c6e-e6c01cac9cc1cfe31ef595ca45f3b3a823a03805&type=2Google Apps for K-12 Schools--offers a full suite as above but in a protected student version.http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/edu/index.htmlGaggle--Another student online program, now offers a full suite of apps. https://www.gaggle.net/

  6. Online Bookmarking Delicious--This is the first online bookmarking app that I tried. It's good for us, but great for our students b/c they aren't always on the same machine. Also allows you to see bookmarks of other educators. www.delicious.com Diigo--This is the one I use now, and it will pull from your Delicious bookmarks. It also allows you to highlight pieces of info, and put sticky notes right on the webpage you are looking at and then email it to others. www.diigo.com/educationwww.diigo.com/education

  7. Audio only...podcasts I use Audacity to save my audio, (or Aviary is a similar online tool) and then there are a number of hosting sites that you can link your audio to, for others to hear. It is not a podcast unless it is online and someone can download it. http://audioboo.fm This is a free hosting site in which you can make your podcasts public or not. http://www.podbean.com Podbean is another free hosting site that I have used. Again, your podcasts are only public if you choose for them to be.

  8. Multi-Media Apps: Jing-- This application is very cool and very easy to use! Online app that lets you make up to a 5 minute video of whatever is on your desktop. You can then save it to your hard drive, or upload it to Screencast to host it on the web. http://www.techsmith.com/jing/free Windows Movie-maker-- This application is really quite simple to use as well. Use a video camera (like a flip cam), a web cam from your computer, or still images. Teacher Tube is quite user friendly to upload to, as well as free. A great source if you are looking for a video as well. www.teachertube.comwww.teachertube.com

  9. More multi-media apps.. Animoto- A free online version that allows you to create video very easily with photos, video clips music etc. www.animoto.com http://memoov.com A free online video service for creating animated videos . I have only looked at this site, but looks pretty interesting.

  10. Book Trailers....what a great way to entice others to read the book! Book trailers are videos that are created to spark viewers attention about a particular book, and want to go out and read it! Book trailers don't tell the whole story of a book, but rather like a movie trailer entices us to see the movie, so does a book trailer. Any number of the multi-media apps can be used to create a book trailer.  A great site to get started and look at some examples is: http://www.homepages.dsu.edu/mgeary/booktrailers/late_elementary.htm http://www.booktrailersforreaders.com/ As well as a pdf on "how to make a book trailer" using photo story http://www.techlearning.com/printablearticle/8160

  11. Presentations....and more... http://www.slideshare.net/ This is a great free site that you can share your powerpoint presentations, as well as search for one that is already made from the 1000's that are hosted there. http://show.zoho.com This is another online presentation site that allows you to make video, share the link and eliminates saving presentations on a stick or trying to email because they are so large! VoiceThread--I think of this app as a powerpoint on steriods! I see great potential in this app for educational purposes. It is probably the one app that I would pay for the teacher version. It allows you to create a slideshare presentation, add comments either by text, audio etc. and invite others to view and comment! www.voicethread.com http://voicethread4education.wikispaces.com

  12. Collaboration: Skype: I think most of you are either using Skype or at least are familiar with it. Very user friendly, and free communication tool, for school and personal use. I would really consider having my students registering for a skype account, and that is how they could contact you after hours. Skype also allows you to share desktops. Now, the Beta version of Skype has the ability to have video conversations with up to 4 participants at the same time. www.skype.com Dimdim: Is another app that allows up to 10 people to see the shared desktop. Use it along with Skype for the voice, and you can have a virtual meeting, class, tutoring session etc. for free.  http://www.dimdim.com/pricing/comparison

  13. Some cool free applications.... www.polleverywhere.com This free site lets you instantly see data based on the question you asked your class. They can respond via the web or cellphone text. http://edu.glogster.com This site allows you to make interactive posters that can include photos, videos, music, text etc. Has great potential for almost any subject area! This is the educators site and you can add students. http://www.wordle.net This site lets you create "word clouds" based on the text you include. Words used more often are larger in the cloud.

  14. More Cool Apps... http://www.wordia.com This is an online dictionary with a difference. This site has a video along with the word showing personal meaning to a word.  http://www.storyjumper.com This site lets students create online books. They can input their story, their own pictures etc. I think great for early years, as well as older students writing childrens' stories. http://www.dipity.com Pretty cool site for creating timelines.  http://www.fodey.com/generators/newspaper/snippet.asp An online newspaper creator! Looks pretty neat--like a newspaper would.

  15. And more apps... http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/ This site enables you to make any number of graphs. Very user friendly!  http://artpad.art.com/artpad/painter/ A fun little tool to let you create artwork! http://www.calcoolate.com/ An online calculator with more functions.  http://www.khanacademy.org/ This site has literally hundreds of videos on all math and science topics. From early years to Calculus. Great resource!

  16. And still more.... www.goodreads.com This site is a great site not only to find good reads, but to create a personal account and list their books. Teacher can create a class group for lit circles. Sort of an e-portfolio of who they are as readers.   http://thoora.com This news site breaks down the world news into topics such as world news, business, sports etc. http://www.wallwisher.com  This free site allows you to have an online bulletin board. Could be used for announcements, brainstorming etc. http://blabberize.com/ This is a cute little app that allows photos/images to move their mouth like they are talking!

  17. Now, where to start? I wouldn't try and do all apps right away, but choose one or two and experiment with them. Your students will likely catch on to them quicker than we do :) Also, when signing up for online apps, I would recommend using an alias and password that is consistent for all of your online apps.  If you find an application is blocked, but yet you feel it is worthwhile educationally, then ask to have it unblocked.  Have fun working with the many online apps that are available! Share those that you feel are good with your peers. A great blog that I like is:  http://www.freetech4teachers.com
