Orientation Schedule & Objectives 6:00- 6:30 Welcome and Overview in the Auditorium Registration Process Timeline Information Location Course Information 4 Year Planning Freshmen Options & Recommendations 6:30- 7:15 Building Tours and Faculty Representatives Academic Department Specifics Student Ambassadors available to answer general questions about the high school experience

  3. 8th Grade Registration Process Timeline Ms. Hamilton and Mr. Tandy will be at VS Middle school March 1st and March 4th to help students register for classes. Students will take their registration sheets home for parental consultation and signature. The sheets must be returned by March 5th After the master schedule is developed, students will be consulted about conflicts and individual class schedules will be set up for the year.

  4. Paper copies of the Course Handbook can be obtained by filling out the request form on the bottom of the orientation sheet you received tonight and leaving it in the basket on the language arts table in the gym. • The requested copies will be distributed to your student on Friday.

Graduation Requirements 29 Total Credits Required for Graduation • **A 60 min. class meeting every day will receive .5 credits / term. • -4 English Credits • -3 Math Credits • -3 Science Credits • 3 Social Studies Credits • -2 PE Credits • -.5 Computer and Workplace Skills Credits • - .5 Personal Financial Management Credits

  7. 4 Year Plan Every student will develop a 4 year plan to aid their academic progress through high school; the plan is initially developed in 8th grade and reviewed/updated each year. The plan is created and held in an online student account through Ihaveaplaniowa.gov It is important to remember that the plan is a guideline, not an a absolute, and may/will be changed during the student’s 4 years in high school.

  8. 4 Year Plan • Inclusion of all required classes for graduation from VSHS. • Consultation and then inclusion of elective courses most relevant for anticipated career direction after high school • Focus on being BEST prepared for “next step” after high school, i.e. college entrance requirements, apprenticeship opportunities etc.

  10. Freshman Required Courses -2 to 3 terms of Language Arts ( 8th gr. LA teacher’s recommendation) -2 to 3 terms of Math (8th gr. Math. teacher ‘s recommendation) -3 terms of General Science -1 term of American History I -1 term of Computer & Workplace Skills -1 term of PE

Required vs. Elective Courses • Required courses are specific classes which you MUST take and successfully complete in order to graduate. • Elective courses are classes that you CHOOSE to take; primarily depends upon your interests, post-secondary plans and career direction. • Both types of courses earn credit towards the total 29 credits you must earn to graduate.

SENIOR YEAR PLUSVinton-Shellsburg High School RequirementsV-S HS Administratively Approved: 1/11/10V-S CSD Board of Education Adopted: 1/25/10 • The stateguidelines now require all students enrolling in Senior Year Plus eligible courses (starting the fall of 2010) tobe proficient in reading (Reading Comprehension Test), math (Mathematics Concepts and Problem Solving Test), and science (Analysis of ScienceMaterials) as assessed through Iowa Assessments. Exception is CTE courses. • STATE APPROVED CRITERIA ENSURING READING, MATH & SCIENCE PROFICIENCY AS REQUIRED BY SENIOR YEAR PLUS (SYP): • The student is proficient on the reading, math, and science portions of the Iowa Assessments. Proficiency is a National Percentile Rank of 41 or higher on each of these tests.

Considerations • Choose a variety of elective options – explore something new. • Time management skills are essential in high school. • We recommend that every freshman student have at least one study hall to assist with the transition to high school level courses. Consider which term(s) you may have extra-curricular activities or the heaviest course load.

  18. Students in Music If a student is in band OR choir, not both: -They will have ½ a period of study hall 1st period every day. -For two terms they may have an additional full period study hall. If a student is in both band and choir, or neither: -They may have 1 full period study hall per term.

  19. Questions • THANK YOU for coming to orientation!! • Transition per verbal instructions to either building tours or consultation with department representatives in the gym. After 20 minutes the groups will switch activities.
