  3. Santa Anna and the Mexican War • 19th century Santa Anna dom. M. politics • Fought in wars against imperialism (Spain & Texas) • Texan revolt (different ideas) • Mexico lost Texas • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo- lost more land

  4. Juárez and La Reforma • Benito Juárez rose to power • Opposite status of Santa Anna (poor) • Juárez was a politician, lawyer, reformer • Wanted reforms • Redistribute the land, separate church and state, more education for poor • Liberals fought conservatives: Civil War • France invaded and took over • After 5 years, F. left & Juárezreturned

  5. PorfirioDíaz and “Order and Progress” • 1867 PorfirioDíaz became prez. by ousting Juárez • Military dictator “order and progress” • Expanded RR, built banks, stabilized money, invested abroad • Country appeared to be stable • Class division

  6. Revolution and Civil War • 1900s Mexicans hungry and upset (protest) • Francisco Madera (wealthy candidate-D) • Díaz had him arrested • Mexican Revolution starts (Díaz vs. V&Z) • “Pancho Villa” (N) very popular • Emiliano Zapata (S) very popular too • Finally Díaz steps down “Land and liberty”

Series of Leaders • After war, Mederotakes power • Too liberal, looses power quickly • General Victoriano Huerta takes over • Unpopular, is overthrown in 15 months • Carranza takes over • Revises constitution, was overthrown • Alvaro Obregóntakes over • Violent take over, made changes, assassinated • Institutional Revolutionary Party takes over
