  2. Learning Objectives • To understand that conflicting truth claims can be difficult to negotiate. • To recognise that there are different views about what tolerance is, and what these views are. • To make your own critical judgement about which view of tolerance is best.

  3. What Do We Mean By Tolerance? Task: • Organise the definitions into a pyramid shape, with the best one at the top and the least helpful ones at the bottom.

  5. Which definition of tolerance is best? • Do you agree with your partner’s placing of the definitions? Why/why not?

  6. Applying our understanding of tolerance Task: Read the two definitions on the handout carefully. Look at the scenarios. Which definition works best for each scenario? That is, does it make more sense for Andy and Jenny to say ‘we’re both right’ or does it make more sense for them to allow each other to hold different beliefs and have a discussion?

  7. How should we react in the RE classroom to people we disagree with? In pairs, discuss: • According to each definition of tolerance, how should we behave towards people who disagree with us in class? Then, in your books, complete this sentence... • Tolerance means that when people disagree with me in class, I should ...

  8. Homework • Which definition of tolerance is best? • Answer with reference to the scenarios, or include examples of your own. You can use the sentence starters on the homework help sheet to assist you.
