Personal, Social and Emotional Development • Helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others. • To form positive relationships and develop respect for others. • To develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings. • To understand appropriate behaviour in groups. • To have confidence in their own abilities.

  9. Personal, Social and Emotional Development • This underpins everything we do. Very strong focus throughout the year. • Standalone PSHE lessons. • Stickers, name in the Frame, Special Helpers, shining star, Learning Behaviours (Gold medals) and Gold Star certificates.

  10. Communication and Language • Giving children opportunities to speak and listen in a range of situations. • To develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves. • Involves giving children experiences in a language rich environment.

  11. Physical Development • Involves children being active. • Helps children to develop their coordination, control and movement. • Children are helped to understand the importance of physical activity. • Children are helped to make healthy choices in relation to food.

  12. Literacy • Encouraging children to link sounds and letters to begin to read and write. • To give children access to a wide range of reading materials to ignite their interest. • Literacy focus will be based on books relating to our current topic, and activities will be linked to this

Letters and Sounds (Daily Phonic Programme) • We start in phase 2, learning a sound a day over 4 days, with the 5th day being a revision day. • We learn to blend simple CVC words with our new sounds. • There are 6 weeks in phase 2. • We will let you know how children are getting on in phase 2 at our first parents consultation meeting.

Letters and Sounds (Daily Phonic Programme) Phonics workshop for parents- Monday 15th October 9:00am-9:30am and repeated again on… Thursday 18th October 5:30pm-6:00pm • First set of sounds (phonemes) : s a t p • CVC word examples for blending for reading: • s a t • p a t • t a p • Segmenting (or chopping) for writing: • Say the word, then segment into single sounds.

  15. Reading at St Mark’s • Guided reading will take place once a week. Children read a new book one to one with staff. They then bring the book home to share. • Children will also be able to borrow books from the classroom. • Home/School Reading Diary to record significant progress and next steps.

  16. Writing at St Mark’s • Phonics- Learn to write the new sounds /phonemes learnt. • Write for a purpose: Lists, captions, letters, notes etc.

  17. Mathematics • To develop and improve their skills in counting • To understand and use numbers • To calculate simple addition and subtraction problems • To describe shapes, spaces and measures. • Separate Number input- daily.

  18. Understanding the World • Making sense of their Physical world and their community. • Finding out about people, places, technology and the environment.

  19. Expressive Arts and Design • Exploring and using media and materials- mixing colours, combining media to create different effects, selecting appropriate resources. • Being imaginative- creating simple representations of events, people and objects and imagination through roleplay.

  20. Assessment Profiles are kept on every child to monitor their progress and inform of individual needs and targets. In the pack we will be giving to you today, you will find a copy of the 17 Early Learning Goals which is an expected level the children should reach at the end of Reception.

  21. Home Learning What? When? WOW books – parents & children to record ‘wow’ moments (special achievements). English: daily reading – to be recorded in reading records. Phonics reinforcement based on the sounds currently being studied. Sounds and High Frequency Words will be sent home weekly, on a Friday along with numbers taught through the week.

  22. Reading at Home • What we ask of you: • Daily reading • Reading diary & book in school everyday. • Ask your child about what they’ve read. • Initial or comment the diary after reading. • Talk about and enjoy books at home and read aloud to your child – whatever age they are!
