  6. Why the barcode? Minimum requirement for obtaining shelve-space in retail is to have a barcode. Namibian firms are currently reliant on South Africa’s GS1 accredited barcode centrefor services. This process is costly especially for SME’s. This means that in the global market, all goods linked to barcodes sourced by local firms outside Namibia had lost identity of origin. NTF contracted a research firm to determine the feasibility of setting up Namibia own international accredited barcode centre.
