  3. Sin • Heb. 13:4; 1 Cor. 6:9, 10; Matt. 19:4, 5 • It’s not the “normal, natural thing to do.” • Are you committed to fleeing? Do you really want to escape? • Too many simply “hope” for purity. • Be like Joseph. Gen. 39:6-13 • Have convictions and act on them. • You can do this.

  4. Adultery • Definition • “Unlawful sexual intercourse with the spouse of another.” Heb. 13:4 • Special usage in Matt. 5:32; 19:9; et al. • A widespread problem in America. • Perhaps half of all marriages. • 1/3 of men and 1/4 of women. • 40% of Americans do not find it morally unacceptable.

  6. The Bible and Adultery • Every condemnation of sexual immorality (fornication) condemns adultery. 1 Cor. 5:1; 6:18; et al • Specified in 1 Cor. 6:9, 10; Heb. 13:4 • One allowable cause for divorce. Matt. 5:32; 19:9

  7. Why Adultery Occurs • Kelly Bonewell, psychologist: • Men are looking for a new, better, different sexual experience. Prov. 6:25; 9:17 • Women are seeking friendship and an emotional attachment. • For both, it’s all about self. Luke 9:23

Why Adultery Occurs • Kelly Bonewell: some “just fall into an affair.” • She began having personal conversations with him on the same floor that they worked. • The conversations moved to having lunch regularly at the hospital. • Eventually, they began to meet for lunch or coffee off-site. More and more, a sexual theme covered their conversation. • She ultimately ended up at his apart­ment contin­u­ing these “conversations.” • Recognize the danger.

  9. Four Things We Need to Do • Know the high cost of adultery. • 1Cor. 6:9, 10; Mark 9:47, 48 • Marriage, children, job, financial, etc. Prov. 5:10-14; 6:25-35 • Don’t fall for flattery. Prov. 6:24; 7:21 • Establish and respect boundaries. Prov. 5:8; 7:6-8
