  2. What is Q fever? • Q fever is an illness caused by the bacteria known as Coxiella burnetii. • It affects dogs, cats, birds, sheep, goats, cattle, and rodents, as well as reptiles and amphibians. It also affects humans.

  3. How is it spread? • Q fever is spread through urine, feces, milk, and birth products of the animals listed before. Ticks are also great transmitters of the bacteria.

  4. Where is it found? Q fever is found worldwide, except in New Zealand, and for animals it causes still births or abortions.

  5. Am I at risk? • The main people who get this illness are farmers, vets, or scientists who work with the bacteria. If you drink raw milk, then you are also at risk, although it is very rare.

  6. Symptoms: Acute and Chronic ACUTE • Pains in chest while breathing • Cough • Fever • Headache • Clay Colored Stools • Muscle Pains • Jaundice Chronic • Chills • Prolonged Fever • Fatigue • Night Sweats • Shortness of breath

  7. How will the Dr.’s know I have Q Fever? Dr.’s will suspect this illness if your occupation is working with animals. If you have flu-like symptoms or pneumonia, those are good signs. Antibiotics are used to treat Q fever.
