  1. Pearl Harbor The Date That Will Live in Infamy…

  2. Pearl Harbor • December 7, 1941 – Japan used a surprise attack to eliminate the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Ocean. • Japan saw America as an obstacle to their empire in Asia.

  3. Pearl Harbor • Japan needed natural resources that were located in mainland Asia. • The natural resources were: • Oil • Coal • Rubber • Iron

  4. Pearl Harbor • To gain control of these resources Japan began to invade Asian countries without warning. • These Asian countries allowed Japan to have these valuable resources instead of fighting.

  5. Pearl Harbor • The United States watched Japan take over these countries and FDR believed the U.S. should have done something. • FDR thought that isolationism leads to aggression.

  6. Pearl Harbor • Therefore, FDR refused to allow any Japanese citizens to remove their money from U.S. banks. • FDR also, refused to sell any goods to Japan that could possibly be used for war. • any goods to Japan that could possibly be used for war.

  7. Pearl Harbor • Strategic Materials - any goods to Japan that could possibly be used for war. • These materials included oil and scrap metal.

  8. Pearl Harbor • At this point, Japan relied heavily on American Oil. • Japan got 80% of its oil from America before WWII.

  9. Pearl Harbor • So in response to this embargo (refusal to trade with a country), Japan attacked the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. • The attack took place at 7:30 Am Sunday December 7, 1941.

  10. Pearl Harbor • The attack consisted mostly of Japanese airplanes, a few battle ships and... • Submarines attacked using torpedoes. (Underwater missiles)

  11. Pearl Harbor • The damage to America was devastating: • 21 – U.S. Battleships were sank • 188 U.S. Aircraft were destroyed • 2,403 American lives were lost in the attack

  12. Pearl Harbor • The next day, December 8, 1941: The U.S. declared war on Japan. • This was the event that entered the U.S. into WWII.

  13. Pearl Harbor • FDR was steadfast in his belief that the U.S. would successful in defeating Japan at war. • Shortly afterwards, Germany and Italy declared war on America as well.

  14. Pearl Harbor • This forced America to fight WWII on two fronts or theatres. • Europe - against Germany and Italy • Asia - against Japan
