Example - working with other countries to improve international security law and order, combating illegal migration

Objectives of Immigration Student Policy • Foster the development of international linkages and mutual goodwill and understanding through reciprocal exchange schemes; and • Promote increased foreign exchange earnings from educational services; and • Enhance the quality of New Zealand's educational services.

Well-presented applications To meet lodgement requirements all documents should be with full English translation Fully Completed Application Form • Fully Completed Application Form • Passport-sized Photo • Valid Passport (3 months beyond the NZ departure date) • Correct Application Fee paid in cash USD only • Valid Offer of Place (detailed letter) • Evidence of Funds: Original and copies of bank statements or deposit slips Detailed source of funds explanation (History of savings) On-going financial ability and/or sponsorship form • After Approved-in-principle: Tuition Fee (receipts from school) Maintenance Funds Travel bookings (tickets should not be purchased prior to visa approval)

  7. Genuine Student • Age • Level of Qualifications • Study Plan • Current Academic Performance • Study Pattern e.g attendance, motivation, language studies • Current Evidence of English language level (IELTS, etc) • Course match with current qualifications or employment

Health Screening Presently • Students intending stay in NZ for 24 months or more: • complete medical and x-ray certificate; • police certificate if over 17 years; From April 2004 • Students aged 11 and over intending to stay in NZ for more than 6 months: • undergo TB screening; From mid-late 2004 • Any person aged 11 and over intending to stay in NZ for more than 12 months (as a resident, worker or visitor): • undergo TB screening; By end of 2004 • Any person aged 11 and over intending to stay in NZ for 6 months and coming from a high-risk country: • undergo TB screening; • Any person intending to stay in NZ for 12 month or more: • undergo a full medical examination.

  9. Variations • Students may be granted a variation of conditions to their student permit to allow them to work for no more than 15 hours per week and during the Christmas and New Year holiday period if they are: • undertaking a full-time course of study taking at least two academic years; • undertaking a full time course of study resulting in a qualification that would attract points under the Skilled Migrant Category • On completing the course any polytechnic or university undergraduate student, who successfully completes studies in NZ may be granted a work permit to obtain practical experience suitable to qualifications where their course: • has a minimum completion time of 3 years, • attracts points under the Skilled Migrant category

  10. Poorly Presented Applications • One bank statement only with big amount of funds deposited recently • No statement of source of funds • Parents’ employment letters without contact details • Lack of contact details • Plain photocopies of documents in Russian only • Non-genuine documents
