  2. Background • Fiscal Year ends September 30 • Budget for financial year 2013-2014 • No agreement---government shutdown

Story behind the story • Republicans using the budget as leverage in their opposition to Obamacare. • Obama and the democrats want to introduce a new healthcare system, The Affordable Care Act • For this law to work, all Americans have to take out health insurance • Republicans have been opposed too this- • Supreme Court ruling

  4. History • Government shutdown has happened in the past- many times, the longest- 21 days • The longer it lasts, the stronger the effects on the American people and the global economy

  5. Current Effects • 800,000 federal workers –NO PAYCHECK • Could cost the US economy about $1 billion a week in lost pay. Consequences? • A three to four week shutdown could cost the economy about $55 billion. • During this time- President and Congress continue getting paid.

  7. Approval ratings for Obama and Congress at an all time low

  8. Where are we today? Day 9 • President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner held separate news conferences. • Obama stated that he was not budging on his insistence that the Republicans in Congress raise the borrowing authority and pass a bill to fund the government. • Boehner rejected the idea • The government shutdown is denying financial benefits to families of troops killed in combat. • 56 public offices for Veterans were closed to veterans wanting to make claims

Day 9 cont. • Health and Safety issues affected • NTB did not send anyone to investigate a bus accident that killed 8 people or a metro explosion • A salmonella outbreak that has affected hundreds has not been investigated. • Furloughed members of National Marine Fisheries Services can’t issue permits. • Federal Aviation Administration- safety inspectors not working • NASA- shut down almost entirely • No trash collection in DC • Head Start programs for preschoolers- closed

Still open • Federal Courts- 10 days • Supreme Court- • US Tax Court- tax audits would be suspended • Airport screening- will continue • Amtrak- for now • Student loans-yes • Federal retirees – will continue to get pensions and health care • Veterans – benefits and health care, at least through late October
