  1. Section 5: Alcohol and Other Drugs • Which body system is immediately endangered by drug abuse? • What are some commonly abused drugs and how does each effect your body? • How does alcohol abuse harm the body?

Drugs = substances that cause physical or emotional changes • Natural Remedies = contain substances that occur in nature • Very dangerous if misused • Over-the-Counter (OTC) Drugs = can be legally bought without a doctor’s prescription • Prescription Drugs = require a doctor’s written order to a pharmacist • Tobacco Products = contain nicotine • Alcohol • Illegal Drugs = cannot be legally sold, purchased, and/or used • Unrecognized Drugs = found in products not usually classified as drugs • Caffeine • Inhalants

  3. Drug Use = taken properly and in correct amounts • Drug Misuse = improper use • Taking the wrong amount • Stopping too soon • Taking someone else’s prescription • Drug Abuse = use of a legal drug for a nonmedical reason or use of any illegal drug

  4. Drug Abuse • Drug abuse can have serious consequences. However, there are ways to tell if someone is abusing drugs and ways to help that person.

  5. Alcohol • Alcohol is a drug found in many beverages, including beer, wine, cocktails, and hard liquor. Alcohol is a powerful depressant and affects every system of the body.
