  2. Introduction • Today we will be learning how to produce the snake sound /s/ in the initial position of words, such as in spider, smile, and star. We will be listening to some videos with /s/ sound as well as doing some activities on the internet together. Are you ready? Let’s begin!

Task • We will listen for the /s/ sound in the “Itsy Bitsy Spider” • Listen to someone produce the /s/ sound. • Record and listen to yourself producing the /s/ sound. • Listen to someone say words with the /s/ sound in the initial word position. • Record yourselfreading a list of words with the /s/ sound. • Complete Soupy Seal sentences

Process • Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwwUb978l_c and listen to the “Itsy Bitsy Spider.” You only need to listen to 1 minute and 46 seconds of the video (1:46). • Then go to http://www.uiowa.edu/~acadtech/phonetics/english/frameset.html • At the top click on “fricative” • Then on the left side click on the “s” • Underneath the drawing click “play” listen to how the /s/ sound is produced. • See how the tip of the tongue moves to the roof of the mouth right behind the front teeth. The sides of the tongue touch the sides of the teeth. See how the air is forced over the center of the tongue without using voice. • Now click on play underneath the woman's mouth to listen to her pronounce /s/. • You can click on the word “soap” to hear the /s/ sound in the initial position.

  5. Process • Go to http://vocaroo.com/ • Click on “click to record” • Then click “allow” • Now its your turn to produce the /s/ sound. Put the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth right behind your front teeth. The sides of your tongue should be touching the sides of your teeth. Force air over the center of your tongue without using voice. Make a snake sound “s-s-s-”. • Produce the “s” 10 times. • When finished click on “click to stop” • Then click on “listen” you can hear yourself pronouncing the /s/ sound.

  6. Process • Go to http://www.starfall.com/n/level-k/letter-s/load.htm?f • Click on the green arrow when it appears • Then click on the orange “s” • Then the green arrow once again. • Follow this pattern throughout the video. • Listen to the person pronounce the words with the /s/ sound.

Process • Now go to http://mommyspeechtherapy.com/wp-content/downloads/articulation/s-initial_words.pdf • Choose any ten words from the list • Go to http://vocaroo.com/ you will record yourself repeating each word ten times. • To record click on “click to record” • Then click “allow” • Remember when producing the /s/ sound in each word to: • Place the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth right behind your front teeth and force the air over the center of your tongue without using voice. • When you complete your repetitions click on “click to stop” • Then click on “listen” you will hear yourself pronouncing the /s/ sound.

  8. Process • Go to http://www.speakingofspeech.info/May18/soupysealfirstcardsetlandscape.pdf • Pick four of the Soupy Seal cards • Each card contains a phrase write the phrase on a sheet of paper and complete the sentence. • When you are finished you will read the sentences to the class.

Process Accommodations • For English Language Learners (ELL) and students with learning disabilities I would either spend more one-on-one time or pair them with another student to help them as they work through the webquest. • ELL students can also go to http://translation2.paralink.com/ or for Spanish speakers http://www.spanishdict.com/ copy the directions into the box and get the translation. • For Spanish speakers the “Itsy Bitsy Spider” in Spanish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03lS9ZKzoRc

  11. Conclusion • Today, we learned to produce the /s/ snake sound, recorded words with /s/ in the initial position, as well as completed Soupy Seal sentences. You all did a great job! • Remember to always raise your tongue tip behind your front teeth and force air through the center of our tongue without using voice.
