The Flowering of Islamic Civilization • The Abbasids had taken control of the Muslim caliphate from the Umayyad dynasty by 750 C.E. • They focused on trade, education, and the arts. • Baghdad in modern day Iraq, Cairo in Egypt, and Cordoba in Spain became large cities full of wealth, culture and knowledge. • Muslims learned from other cultures, and helped spread cultural elements to other places. • Muslims passed paper making from the Chinese to Europe. • Used Greek knowledge of science and medicine to make new discoveries. • Muslims are NOT just from Arabia, but are Persians, Egyptians, North Africans, Turks, and many others.

  3. City Building and Architecture • Many large cities developed in Muslim lands This growth encouraged a new type of Architecture • City Of Baghdad Took 100,000 architects, workers, and craftsman to build the capital Took 4 years to build • Mosque -Muslim house of Worship

  4. Scholarship and Learning • Highly valued in Islamic Culture • Arabic Language promoted learning • Allowed for shared learning between Europe, Asia and North Africa • Built schools • Colleges • Libraries

  5. Science and Technology • High interest in the natural world • Zoology- Study of Animals • Astronomy- Study of the stars • Irrigation and Underground Wells

  6. Geography and Navigation • Most educated people believed the earth was round • Muslim scientists calculated the circumference within 9 miles of the correct value • Created very accurate maps • Used to travel on pilgrimages to places such as Mecca

  7. Mathematics • Very advanced in Mathematics • Based their work on ancient Greece and India • Khwarizmi who is known as “the father of algebra” • Big help to business and trade • Spread the idea of zero

  8. Medicine • Established the first hospitals • Place of learning for doctors in training • All people received medical treatment since it was paid for by the government • Pharmacists made hundreds of medications • Realized infections were spread by bacteria • Wrote medical books

  9. Literature • Learned paper making from Asia • Koran was most popular book sold • “A Thousand and One Nights” became very popular • Showcased Muslims rich heritage for storytelling and poetry.

  10. Music and Art • Calligraphy • Highest form of decorative art • Form of handwriting • Koran was worthy • Textiles • Made clothes • Showed ranks and were a status Symbol • Music • First music school established • Singing is very important
