  1. DAIPRE: SHELLY Stephanie Kwok2013

  2. Student profile • Student Name: Shelly • Grade: 3 • She is an intermediate ELL student. She moved to Vancouver with her parents from Hong Kong 5 years ago.  Her parents moved to Vancouver because of work connections.  Her parents speak very limited English. She has a younger brother who is in Grade 1.

  3. Student interests • She enjoys drawing, coloring, and crafts. • She loves playing board games and cards. • She enjoys reading. • She enjoys the beach. • She likes learning about animals.

  4. Learning needs • Although she reads well on a basic Grade 3 level, she has difficulties with English sayings, expressions, and specialized words/terms. • Her grammar and spelling require work. • She struggles with Math when colloquial or vague expressions are used. Word problems are an issue. • Although she speaks well during casual social situations, she refuses to comment or read aloud for school/schoolwork related purposes. • She is easily distracted by her classmates and friends. • She learns best with audio and visuals. • She is very bright in terms of her thoughts and ideas, but may often require a lot of rewording sentences and or repeating.

  5. Digital learning tool options • Quizlet • http://quizlet.com/ • Raz-kids • http://www.raz-kids.com • Cookie • http://www.cookie.com/ These websites will serve as Digital Learning Tools that will enhance Shelly’s learning within Social Studies and Language Arts. They will target her language needs by enabling a more fun and engaging means of practicing vocabulary and English expressions while being easily accessible to use for both herself and her family.

  6. Digital learning tool #1 • Quizlet (http://quizlet.com/) • Has the option to show the meaning of the English word in another language. Student can thus retain her L1 while at the same time connecting the meanings between her L1 and L2. • Be an aid for weekly class spelling tests. • Will encourage her to write a list of words she wants to learn, which will then be added to the flash card set on Quizlet. • Can also add these words based on teacher assessment of her work. • Shelly will be encouraged to practice these words with family members and friends. • Will also be helpful for learning in advance specific vocabulary to be used in future assignments within the week. • Will also be encouraged to utilize Quizletin future grades. • Has visual and auditory features incorporated.

  7. Digital learning tool #2 • Raz-kids (http://www.raz-kids.com) • Offers a variety of books for Elementary school children and allows for audio aid also. • Additional resources are provided, such as printable lessons and books, and there are quizzes that go along with the books that can help test what Shelly understands of what she has read. • Will help in assessing Shelly in more detail, while also improving her reading fluency skills and providing her with the opportunity to do something she enjoys. • Currently, students are already required to read 1 book per day and to log it into their student planners. For Shelly, this will be modified so that 1-2 books she reads per week must be from raz-kids.

  8. Digital learning tool #3 • Cookie (http://www.cookie.com/) • This website is a really fun, colorful, and exciting interactive website featuring many games, stories, videos, worksheets, and arts and crafts for students learning the English language. • Is targeted at younger students from K-2, but includes a lot of useful vocabulary and cultural information ELL students in Grade 3 can take from also. • Will help develop a stronger vocabulary foundation to build upon, whilst reinforcing prior knowledge. • Is a website that is targeted at Shelly’s interests and hobbies. • Will be optional for Shelly to play around with at home, However, the resource teacher can also encourage Shelly to play this during the first couple weeks by introducing it during one-on-one sessions.
