  4. Why conscription? • NK is a threat! • Military service trains huge parts of population-imperial occupation is impossible • Nationalist pride • Tradition?

Conscription vs. All-Volunteer • Cheap labor-slavery? • Regular population • Train higher percentage of population • Develops discipline • Low morale • Expensive labor/benefits • Recruitment can be low • Very small percentage of population • Isolated from nation • High morale unless during wars of choice (U.S-Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan)

Important Info • 134 died in the SK military (2009) -2/3 (81) committed suicide- Yonhap News Jan 7, 2010 • 30-40% of draftees suffer physical punishment and abuse • Thousands of people avoid military service, some are conscientious objectors, others pull teeth or get tattoos • Since 1939, 15,000 conscientious objectors have been imprisoned for avoiding military service - The Broken Rifle, May 2009, No. 82 • The U.S. maintains 28,500 troops in South Korea, 35,688 in Japan • Korea’s armed forces numbered 3,853,000 in 2010 (653,000 active force and 3,200,000 regular reserve)
