THE RAPID GROWTH OF DUBAI Dubai is a city that has grown rapidly in recent years and this growth has come with a significant increase in energy consumption. With a population of over 2.5 million people and a large number of tourist attractions, the city's energy demand is expected to continue to grow. That is why the government plans to diversify the mix of energy sources.
DUBAI CLEAN ENERGY STRATEGY In the month of November 2015, Sheikh Mohammad launched the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy The first goal is to generate 75% of the city's total power capacity from renewable energy sources by 2050. This will be achieved through the development of large-scale solar, wind and other renewable energy projects. The government of Dubai has already made significant investments in these projects, including the construction of the world's largest concentrated solar power plant, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The power plant aims to generate five thousand megawatts of energy by the end of 2030.
INCREASING ENERGY EFFICIENCY Another key goal of the Dubai Energy Strategy is to increase the efficiency of energy usage in the city, for example, an efficient cooling system. This will be achieved through the implementation of energy-efficient technologies and the adoption of best practices in energy management. The government of Dubai will also encourage businesses and individuals to adopt energy-efficient practices by offering incentives and subsidies. The establishment of the Dubai Green Fund worth 100 billion AED to give out easy loans to startups with green energy practices as part of the strategy is another significant step.
RAISING AWARENESS The strategy also aims to create a culture of sustainability and raise awareness about the importance of clean energy and energy efficiency. The city will also promote public transportation and encourage the use of electric vehicles. The government will also promote a global training programme in the domain of green energy. This initiative will be executed with several global partners such as International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena).
