  2. William Shakespearwasan English poet, playwrightand actorwidely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.

  3. William Shakespearwasborn at Stratford on Avon in the Aprilof 1564. Hewas the eldest son and attended the localgrammarschool.

  4. HemarriedAnne Hathawaywhenhewasonlyeighteen. In 1584hewenttoLondon. In 1593 the London theatreswereclosedfor the plague, and Shakespeare needed the supportof a private patron.

  5. When the theatresreopened, Shakespeare become a shareholder and the mainplaywrightof the mostsuccessful company ofactors in London: the Lord Chamberlain’s Men.

  6. In 1599his company built the Globe Theatre. Between1590 and 1596hemainlywroteHistoricaldramas. Hediedwhenhewas52 years.

  7. Shakespeare’s sonnetswerepublished in 1609. The collectionincluded154 sonnets in decasyllables. Heusedthreequatrainsand a final couplet. Hissonnetsfollows the structureof the Petrarcform.

  8. Shakespeare’s sonnetsprobablycirculatedamongsthis private friends and were sent tohispatron. The 1609publicationincluded154 sonnetsnotnecessarychronological.

  9. The sonnets can bedividedintotwosection: • Sonnets I to XVIII: these are devotedto the themeofincrease. The poetencourages the young man tomarry and preservehisvirtues and beauty troughhischildren. • Sonnets XVIII to CXXVI: these deal withdifferenttopics. Amongthem the poet’s warningabout the poweroftime and moralweakness.

  10. The secondsection, from the sonnetCXXVIIto the end, isaddressedto a “Dark Lady” or “Black Woman” whoisirresistiblydesirable. Thereisalso a reversalof the tradictionalthemesof love sonnets. The traditional love poemspraising the woman’s worth and beauty are addressesbyshakespeareto a young man.

  11. The style of the sonnetsischaracterizedby a rich and vividdescriptivelanguage. The poetplaysemploys the “couplet tie”, thatis, a thematicallyimportant word whichisrepeated in the couplet fromone or more of the first twelvelinesofsonnets.
