China 1911-1920 • Overthrow of the last Emperor of China 1911 • Nationalist group led by Sun Yixian led overthrow • Group is called Kuomintag (KMT) • Sun believes in nationalism, democracy, equality • KMT takes over government • Sun becomes president of new Republic of China 1912 • Lacks support of wealthy landowners • Landowners become warlords • Warlords form their own armies and governments • Challenge Sun’s KMT • General Chinese public upset about terms of Treaty of Versailles • Former German sphere’s of influence given to Japan • Students from Beijing University begin protesting during the May Fourth Movement, 1919. • Brought attention to the failing government. Down with Western Imperialism!

China 1921-1929 • May Fourth protesters are led by Mao Zedong • Western countries refuse to give Sun’s • new government support • Mao says, USSR can help • USSR helps -Mao & communists must be allowed to join KMT • Sun dies 1925 • Jiang Jieshcontrols KMT • Mao helps Jiesh beat warlords • Jiesh turns on communists • Mao & communists flee to exile

China 1930-1937 • US & Britain recognize Jiesh’s government. • Mao begins organizing army while in exile • Calls for communist revolution • Trains peasants in guerilla warfare • Mao’s army attacks KMT • Civil War breaks out • After years, KMT is beating Mao’s army • Mao retreats “The Long March” • Nationalist chase communists • 370 days; 8,000 miles • 1937 Japan invades Manchuria • Truce between Mao & KMT • Combine forces to fight Japan!
