  2. Activities since March 2005 • BCA 2005 at Loughborough • BCA Industrial Group Autumn Meeting • ICDD products mini-survey (UK & Ireland)

  3. BCA Spring Meeting 2005, Loughborough UniversityApril 12th – 14th, 2005

  4. Highlights • In-situ and non-ambient crystallography (Plenary session) • XRF session (WDXRF & EDXRF) organized and chaired by Dave Taylor • ICDD booth • ICDD Bursary winner

  5. ICDD Booth

  6. ICDD Bursary Winner – Nicola S. Turvey (School of Life & Health Sciences, Aston University, Birmingham)

  7. Bursary Certificate

  8. BCA Industrial Group Autumn Meeting, October 18th & 19th, 2006 at Birkbeck College, London • Workshop - Patents in Crystallography • Patents & Crystallography in Industry • Crystallography in Industry

  9. ICDD Products mini-survey • Contacted UK & Ireland users of ICDD products with 3 questions 1. Which ICDD product(s) do you have? 2. Are you happy with it/them? 3. What changes or improvements would you like to see?

  10. Response to survey • Contacted a total of 64 users in the UK and Ireland (53 academic and 11 industrial users). • Received a total of 16 replies (13 academic and 3 industrial users).

  11. 1. Which ICDD products do you have? • 13 respondents have PDF-2 (from versions 1999 to 2005) • 3 have PDF-4

  12. 2. Are you happy with them? • 16 respondents said “yes” , with qualifying remarks such as: “very happy”, “essential to my work”, “it serves its purpose”, “generally happy” and “reasonably happy”.

  13. 3. What changes or improvements would you like to see? • Need some coaching with PCSIWIN (SIeve) and PCPDFWIN (DDview). Lack of tutorial help. Would appreciate a short User’s Guide in hardcopy form. Need a one-day UK based workshop(!). [3 respondents]

  14. Question 3 continued • Unhappy with pricing and cost of updates. [7 respondents]

  15. Question 3 continued • Site licence restricts use to one computer [2 respondents] • Why keep “O” quality data? • Why keep “deleted” data? • PCPDFWIN – search result lists phase ID, chemical name, formula, strongest lines & crystal system, but no quality mark.

  16. Question 3 continued • Why is there no discount for ICDD members? • Would be helpful to be able to save data pattern in card format. • Would like search routines on unit cell (like ICSD Crystal Web). • More data on synthesis. • Web subscriber system needed.

  17. Question 3 continued • Don’t like time-locked policy [2 respondents] • Rules on what constitutes an academic institute are inconsistent. • Would like ICDD educational products available on the Web. • Calculated data sets (70-86) clutter up the database.

  18. Forthcoming Activities • British Crystallographic Association (BCA) Spring Meeting at Lancaster University.

  19. BCA Spring Meeting, Lancaster University, April 4th – 6th, 2006

  20. Full day XRPD Workshop on Phase Identification Tutors: John Faber (Principal Scientist, ICDD), Dave Taylor & David Rendle. • History & structure of the Powder Diffraction File • Phase Identification • Advanced phase identification and quantitative analysis • Hands-on computer session.
