What are trends?. Trends are long lasting changes in the world, fads are short term changes that can exist with trends. People sometimes use the terms interchangeably, but for our class we use the word trend to define long term changes.

  1. What are trends? • Trends are long lasting changes in the world, fads are short term changes that can exist with trends. People sometimes use the terms interchangeably, but for our class we use the word trend to define long term changes. • Example: it has been a long term trend that people wear blue jeans (trend), however the type, style and colour vary according to the time period (fad)

  2. Globalization • Where were your shoes made? • Where were your clothes made?

  3. Changing Work Environment Traditional Business Way: people are employed to perform all services, benefits are paid, with insurance, vacation time, and retirement pensions. The idea is that good workers will stay a long time, less staff turnover, workers will be loyal. Each business has separate depts. who handle all the company’s needs inhouse.

  4. Future Business Way?? – Business owner employs only enough people to do the core business work. All other business needs are outsourced • What is Outsourcing? • The contracting out of a job that used to be done by a unit within the organization.

Everything Can Be Outsourced • What does this mean to You! • more small and medium size businesses that service larger industries and governments • they are more flexible to adjust to new trends • current job growth – self-employment, small businesses (1-99 employees), and medium sized businesses (100-499 employees) • Therefore: you must learn flexible skills and you will probably work for a smaller business or for yourself

  7. Workplace vs. Virtual Office(over 1 million Canadians spend at least part of their week telecommuting)-eg fax, email, internet, video teleconferencing) Advantages? Disadvantages? Personal Qualities Necessary?

The Flexible Workforce Seasonal – work only during specific seasons Just in Time – hired only when needed Home-based- self-employed or working for a business Contract work – self employed but working for another business Telecommuting- using technology to do your work outside of a business environment
