  3. Declaration of War • Sparta declares war in 431 B.C. • Athens had strangest navy • Sparta was inland • Why is this significant? • Pericles’ strategy • Avoid land battle • Wait for opportunity to strike Sparta’s allies @ sea

  4. Sparta’s strategy • March into territory • Burn all food sources for Athenians • Athenians have to bring everyone w/i city walls • Problem for Sparta was that Athens could still trade by sea

  5. Sparta gains edge • 2nd year of war a plague hits (430 B.C.) • Kills 1/3 – 2/3 of pop. • Pericles dies • 415 B.C. Athens sends 27,000 foot soldiers to destroy Syracuse (Sparta’s wealthiest ally) • 413 B.C. defeated & return home

  6. End of War • 404 B.C. Athens surrenders • Political change • 27 years of war w/ defeat • Weakens government • Changes programs
