  1. SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

  2. Standard Form: 485 The standard form of a number is the way we are used to seeing a number written.

  3. Scientific Notation 485 = 4.85 x 102 Standard Form Scientific Notation Scientific Notation is when a number iswritten as a number between 1 and 10, times a power of 10.

  4. Writing a number using Scientific Notation….. • Rewrite the number so it is a number between 1 and 10. • Example: • 2670 becomes 2.67

  5. Multiply this decimal number by the power of ten that will move the decimal point back to its original position. Example: 2670 became 2.67 x 103 We put an exponent of three because the decimal moved three places from its original location.

  6. Example 1 8,300,000 • Move the decimal point to make the number between 1 and 10. 8.3 • Multiply by 10 with an exponent that indicates how far the decimal • has moved. 8.3 x 106

  7. Example 2 0.00079 • Move the decimal point to make the number between 1 and 10. 7.9 • Multiply by 10 with an exponent that indicates how far the decimal has moved. 7.9 x 10-4

  8. Your turn to practice…. • Try writing the number in Scientific Notation and Standard Form…….

  9. 1. • 402,000 • 68,000,000 • 0.08510 • 0.0000014 a) 4.02 x 105 b) 6.8 x 107 c) 8.510 x 10-2 d) 1.4 x 10-6
