  2. Background • Exploratory fishing for orange roughy started in 1994 • During 1997/98 three companies were allocated quotas of • 12 000 tonnes in total. • The fishery has been managed separately for the four known aggregations (QMA’S) • The first scientific survey was conducted in July 1997, using hydro-acoustics and swept area trawls. • Fishing down Strategy was used, based on CPUE • From 2008 to 2010 a moratorium on all catches

  3. Objective 1 To review the historical development of the Orange Roughy fisheries in Namibian waters including catches and fleet. Deliverable 1 Report on the historical development of the Orange Roughy fisheries in Namibian waters including catches and fleet.

  4. Objective 2 To review the biological and ecological data collected during Orange Roughy stock assessment surveys Deliverable 2 Synthesis report of biological parameters for Orange Roughy in Namibia to give an up to date description of the current knowledge of their life history pattern, stock structure and status.

  5. Objective 3 Evaluation of the Orange Roughy closed areas for its efficiency and review of data requirements to evaluate stock recovery. Deliverable 3 Review of current management and monitoring procedures of the Orange Roughy stock in Namibia including evaluation of the efficiency of the closed areas. SWOT (Strength and weaknesses, Opportunities and threats) analysis of scientific projects and data collection programmes, in terms of fulfilling the data requirements for adequate management and monitoring regimes for Orange Roughy.

  6. Objective 4 Review of current management and monitoring procedures for orange roughy in Namibian waters (including assessments, biological reference points, harvest control rules) and status of stocks and identify possible improvements in current management and monitoring framework. Deliverable 4 Proposal of improved management and monitoring framework for Orange Roughy in Namibian waters.
