  1. Health and Hygiene Washing hands often is the MOST important thing you can do for good health! Roaches carry germs on the bottoms of their feet!! Washing hands with SOAP is the best way to prevent disease. If there is no soap, use clean sand or ashes. Cover food to keep off flies, roaches and dirt. • ALWAYS use a toilet. This keeps germs and worm eggs away from places kids play and people work. Never urinate or defecate in rivers or near your well! • Always keep toilet house clean! Feces on feet will carry germs to house! • ALWAYS wash after using the toilet house. • ALWAYS wash hands before cooking or eating food. Wash food before cutting for cooking. • Cook your food completely and eat it while the food is still hot. • Do not allow uneaten food to sit at room temperature. Eat all food while it is hot. If food does sit until cool, reheat it completely before eating. SOAP ALOE Meat always has germs on it. ALWAYS wash knife, cutting surface and hands after cutting meat. To be safe, cut veggies first, THEN cut meat. Sap from the soap aloe plant makes a GREAT natural soap substitute!! 1

  2. Flies carry disease. Flies walk on feces and then on your FOOD!! YUCK! Hang a fly trap inside toilet house! How to make a fly trap: 1. Cut the top part off a plastic bottle. 2. Attach wire or string to the bottle for hanging. 3. Put some sweet bait, like sugar or fruit, in the bottle. 4. Put the top back in the bottle upside-down. Flies will fly in but will not be able to fly out. 5. When the bottle is full, kill flies by drowning and empty it into a toilet Health and Hygiene Tippity Tap To make sure latrine has a source of water for hand washing, hang up a tippity tap nearby! To make a tippy-tap you need a plastic bottle with a screw-on cap and the inside tube from a ball-point pen, or some other small, stiff, hollow tube. 1. Clean the bottle. 2. Using a heated piece of wire, make a small hole in the lower part of the bottle. 3. Remove and clean the inside tube from a ball-point pen. Cut it off at an angle, and push it through the hole in the bottle. The tube should fit tightly. 4. Fill the bottle with water and replace the cap. When the cap is tight, no water should flow through the tube. When the cap is loose, water should flow out in a steady stream. Hang it where people can use it for hand- washing. Keep soap nearby, or thread a bar of soap with string and tie it to the bottle. 5. To use the tippy-tap: Loosen the cap just enough to let water flow. Wet your hands, add soap, and rub your hands together under the water until they are clean. 2
