  2. What is Puberty? • Copy this statement into your workbook. • Puberty is the period of time when children begin to mature biologically, psychologically, socially and cognitively. 8. Hygiene • Someone says he smells? • As boys and girls' bodies develop during puberty so too do their sweat glands. These glands are to help control the body's temperature and result in more sweat being produced. • HOW CAN WE REDUCE THE RISK OF SMELLING AND IMPROVE OUR HYGIENE? • LIST THESE ANSWERS IN YOUR BOOK UNDER THE HEADING ‘HYGIENE’ • Use deodorant under arms daily • Wash clothes regularly • Rotate school t-shirts • Avoid wearing clothes repetitively if not washed. • Brush teeth Morning and Night • Shower Daily with soap • Use face wash or similar to remove excess oil on skin and face • Wash hair when

  9. Increase in Pimples • Most young people get spots around puberty. • Eating less fatty foods (such as chips and chocolate) and drinking lots of water can help. • Pimples during Puberty are caused by hormones, often an overload of Testosterone in both girls and boys is to blame • Hormone inbalance is common during Puberty

  11. How can we help control outbursts? • It is important to try not to pick at, or squeeze the spots as this can cause them to become infected. It may help to use a face wash, cream or lotion, designed specifically for spots. These can often be bought from chemists. • Washing your face more often with mild unperfumed or antiseptic soap and warm water may help, but be careful not to scrub your face as this can irritate the skin. • If you get very bad spots it might be acne. Acne is a common skin condition that mostly occurs on the face, arms, back and chest. If you think that you might have acne, you could speak to a doctor as they will be able to give you advice. • There are also various special creams and medicine that your doctor or a referral to a dermatologist (skin doctor) may prescribe to help you with the problem.

My face is covered in spots all the time, it’s sore and red. I think it is acne but why has it happened so suddenly? Will it go away? Robert, age 14
