  1. Pentecostalism & Charismatic Movement Part Two: Duration of Miraculous Gifts

  2. The Purpose & Duration of Miraculous Action in Bible

  3. John 15:24-27 24If I had not done among them the works which none other did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both Me and My Father. 25But this cometh to pass, that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. 26But when the Comforter is come, Whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall bear witness of Me: 27and ye also bear witness, because ye have been with Me from the beginning.

  4. Mark 16:17-20 17And these signs shall accompany them that believe: in My name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues; 18they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall in no wise hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. 19So then the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken unto them, was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word by the signsthat followed.

  5. Hebrews 2:1-4 1Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away from them. 2For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; 3how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation? which having at the first been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed unto us by them that heard; 4God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders, and by manifold powers, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will.

  6. Summary of Purpose (1) Reveal message under divine control (2) Prove truth revealed by apostles is of divine origin by miracles __________________________________ CONFIRM THE WORD

  7. Duration of Miraculous Action

  8. 1 Corinthians 13 • Love is always required as motivation for all acceptable action (see Matt. 22:34f) • Love distinguished from gifts in that “love never fails” but gifts will be “done away” • When are gifts to be done away? • “When that which is perfect (whole) is come, that which is in part (partial) shall be done away” • What are the parts & the whole?

  9. Part (Partial) & Perfect (Whole)

  10. Will These Parts Make This Whole?

  11. When Partial Revelation Ceases, Product of Revelation Continues • If “part” is one form of revelation, then “perfect” is complete or full revelation • Complete revelation instructs & requires the Christian to be motivated by love • At the completion of revelation, faith & hope also abide on foundation of truth • Full revelation merely compiled the same truth given orally by inspired men • No provision or requirement was changed

  12. That Which Is “Perfect” Could Not Be Second Coming of Christ • Makes no correlation between the “part” and the “perfect” (whole) • Would be insertion into text of something not introduced or explained in text • Would be impossible grammatically as Christ is not “that which” (neuter) but “He who” (masculine) • Would contradict other Scripture in that “faith” & “hope” cease at 2nd coming • If “faith, hope & love” continue after end of gifts, the perfect must be before 2nd coming

  13. Direct & Indirect Action in N.T. • People directly empowered by Spirit twice: • Acts 2 - confirm salvation available in Christ • Acts 10- confirm salvation open to Gentiles • Acts 11:15-16- not ordinary occurrence with all • Direct action (H.S. baptism) promise not command • Eph. 4:5 - one baptism remained at this time (Acts 19:1f) • Gifts of Spirit came indirectly by laying on of the apostles hands • Acts 8:13-21- apostles required to impart gifts • When last apostle died, no more gifts imparted (time limit) • No continuing promise of Holy Spirit gifts or H.S. baptism is given to all Christians

  14. Conclusions

  15. Miraculous Action Has Ceased • No miracles of the nature recorded in Bible taking place now • If so, let us go to cemetery or hospital & see what occurs • Purpose was completed when all truth was revealed & confirmed • We have complete & final revelation from God that needs no further confirmation • At death of last person empowered by laying on of apostles’ hands, miracles ceased
