Organization is the Key to Success • Use your planner • USE a homework folder • Use different colored folders for different subjects. • Have a special place for papers that need to come home. • Develop a consistent routine to replace homework in the appropriate spot in the book bag immediately upon completing it. • Have a specific place to place the book bag when it is ready to return to school and use this location consistently. • Praise your child for following through with the routine

  3. Why Teachers Assign Homework • To deepen a student’s understanding (Practice) • Reflection on material • To extend learning opportunities beyond the confines of the school day • Learn to use resources • Prepare for the next day • Formative Assessment

Benefits of Homework Homework Develops: concept mastery responsibility time management life long learners positive self esteem Allows students the opportunity to: work independently plan, stay organized and avoid distractions. Gives parents a chance to see what their child is learning in school.

Common Homework Snags 􀂄 Not putting enough time / effort into homework 􀂄 Not using their planner effectively 􀂄 Not bringing assignments, books, planner home 􀂄 Taking too long to finish homework because of distractions 􀂄 Waiting until the last minute to do it 􀂄 Not handing in completed work 􀂄 Difficulty with the concept that was covered in class 􀂄 Lack of motivation 􀂄 Feeling overwhelmed 􀂄 Refusing to do homework

  6. Tips & Strategies 1. “ Touch test”- Before you leave the school building check planner , touch books necessary for hw completion 2.Establish a consistent study time and place. Reduce or eliminate distractions 3. Do the “hard stuff” first 4. Take breaks when needed 5. Make a weekly homework schedule which includes long-term projects, and all other activities. 6. Check teacher websites to confirm assignments 7.Encourage students to ask for and stay for extra help when needed. 8. Pack backpack before going to bed

  7. Homework Tip Don’ts • Don’t do the Homework yourself. • Don’t enable your child by making excuses. • Don’t devalue the importance of homework by putting recreational activities before your child’s education. • Don’t get into power struggles. Know when to walk away

How much help should I give? • Role of parent → minimal in instruction and supportive in nature. • Parents are not expected to solve content problems • Reinforce the purpose of homework • Consistently praise your child’s efforts….with emphasis on progress & learning rather than grades. • Communicate with teachers/guidance counselor when you see a problem.

  9. Know each teachers homework policy Provide a comfortable, quiet work area. Create a homework toolkit ( container filled with pencils, pens, markers, ruler, glue stick, scissors, highlighter, paper) Plan a homework schedule and routine.
