  3. Power Writing Format We will assign each sentence a power – that power will be a given number.

  4. The First Power Uses a number word Introduces what the paragraph or paper will be about. There will only be one “NEW” first power sentence in any paper.

  5. Writing the 1st Power Sentence You use words from the prompt and a number word to write the 1st power sentence. We will now practice writing 1st power sentences with variety of prompts.

  6. Think about a time when you were proud of yourself. Describe that time and tell why you were proud of yourself. Example Prompt:

  7. First Power Sentence I was most proud of myself on the day that I saved my sister for three important reasons.

  8. Example Prompt: Pretend that for one day you are a tiny raindrop in a storm. For that day you get to go where raindrops go. Write a story about your adventures as a raindrop in a storm.

  9. First Power Sentence Two fun things happened to me on my adventure as a raindrop in a storm.

  10. Example Prompt: • If you could change anything about your school, what would you change and why would you change it?

  11. 1st Power Sentence If I could change anything about my school, I would change the lunch menu for three reasons.

  14. The Second Power • Always tells more about the first power sentence • There may be several second power sentences in any paper.

  15. Dogs are the best pets for three reasons. Their loyalty has been the basis of many stories about dogs. In addition, their playfulness has delighted children and adults alike through the years. Finally, their protective instincts have often given their owners comfort.

  26. Going to the amusement park offers many attractions for the visitor. All kinds of rides promise thrills to every age. From the giant stand-up roller coaster to the old-fashioned carousel, there is sure to be something for everyone.

  32. The Fourth Power • Always tells more about the third power sentence that is immediately before it. • Good papers have MANY fourth power sentences!

  33. Body Paragraph The first characteristic, movement, is common to all animals at some phase in their lives. For example, the infant turtle comes out of the egg able to move about, find its own food, and care for itself. It will continue to do this for the remainder of its life. However, other animals, such as the barnacle, move only until they find a host. Then they attach themselves and remain there until removed.
