  1. Lesson 2 Key Questions for Chapter 1 • Are Paul’s letters more than personal correspondence? • What is the difference between doctrine and men’s teachings? • What is the purpose of law/ commandments? • Is anyone too sinful to be saved? • Is Christianity passive or active?

  2. Outline of Chapter 1 • Church Doctrine (Ch. 1) • Essentiality of Church Doctrine (1:1-11) • Example of Paul’s Ministry (1:12-17) • Admonition to Timothy: Wage the Warfare (1:18-20)

  3. Are Paul’s letters more than personal correspondence? • How does Paul identify himself as the author of I Timothy? (1 Tim 1:1 NKJV) Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandmentof God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope, • Paul wrote essential commands. (1 Cor 11:23 NKJV) For I received from the Lord ... (1 Cor 14:37 NKJV) ... the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. • Peter said Paul’s letters are Scripture. (2 Pet 3:15-16 KJV) ... our beloved brother Paul … hath written unto you;As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things ... which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, …

  4. Are Paul’s letters more than personal correspondence?--Cont’d • What had been entrusted to Paul? (1 Tim 1:11-12 NKJV) according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust. And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, (Gal 1:11-12 NKJV) But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ. (2 Cor 5:18 NKJV) Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, • Paul refers to “my gospel.” [Rom. 2:16, 16:25; II Tim. 2:8]

  5. What is the difference between doctrine and men’s teachings? • What were the different doctrines that Paul wanted Timothy to combat? • Fables (2 Tim 2:17-18 NKJV) And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. • Genealogies (Heb 7:1-3 NKJV) For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God...without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.

  6. What is the difference between doc-trine and men’s teachings?--Cont’d • What were the different doctrines that Paul wanted Timothy to combat?--Cont’d • Teaching the law without understanding. (Mat 5:43 NKJV) "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' (Mat 5:38 NKJV) "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' (Mat 5:33 NKJV) "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.' (Mat 5:21 NKJV) "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.'

  7. What is the difference between doc-trine and men’s teachings?--Cont’d • What would be the distinctive results of the right and wrong kind of teaching? • Wrong kind of teaching. (1 Tim 1:4 NKJV) … which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. • Right kind of teaching. (1 Tim 1:4 NKJV) … which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. (1 Cor 14:26 NKJV) … Let all things be done for edification. [Same Greek word.]

  8. What is the purpose of law/ commandments? • Why was the “law” made? (1 Tim 1:9 NKJV) knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, … (Gal 3:19 NKJV) What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, … (Gal 3:24 NKJV) Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. The law was for those who did not respond with love toward others and toward God.

  9. What is the purpose of law/ commandments?--Cont’d • What is the “purpose of the commandment”? (1 Tim 1:5 NKJV) Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, (Gal 5:14 NKJV) For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Rom 13:9 NKJV) For the commandments, ... are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

  10. What is the purpose of law/ commandments?--Cont’d • What are some examples of things that are “contrary to sound doctrine”? • lawless and insubordinate, & ungodly and sinners (Compare 10 Comd. Exo. 20:1-17) • unholy and profane--[1] no other gods, [2] no carved images, [3, 4] not abuse God’s name or Sabbath • murders of fathers and mothers & manslayers--[5] honor father and mother, [6] not murder • fornicators & sodomites--[7] no adultery • kidnappers--[8] not steal, [10] not covet neighbor’s male servant • liars & perjurers--[9] not bear false witness

  11. What is the purpose of law/ commandments?--Cont’d • What is “sound doctrine”? (1 Tim 1:11 NKJV) according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust. (1 Tim 1:11 ASV) according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. • What is the purpose of the gospel? (1 Cor 2:7 NKJV) But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, (Eph 3:10 NKJV) ... the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church ... (Rom 1:16 NKJV) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

  12. Is anyone too sinful to be saved? • What kind of person had Paul been when he became a Christian? (1 Tim 1:13 NKJV) although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. (Acts 26:11 NKJV) "And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities. [Acts 8:3, 9:1-2, 22:4, 16:9-11,Gal. 1:13, I Cor. 15:9] (1 Tim 1:15 NKJV) This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

  13. Is anyone too sinful to be saved?--Cont’d • What did Paul say was the significance of his conversion? (1 Tim 1:15-16 NKJV) … Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. • What was Paul’s attitude about his acceptability before God? (1 Tim 1:13-14 NKJV) ... but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. (1 Tim 1:17 NKJV) Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

  14. Is Christianity passive or active? • What responsibility did Paul give to Timothy? (1 Tim 1:18 NKJV) This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, • What two things are essential in fulfilling that responsibility? (1 Tim 1:19 NKJV) having faith and a good conscience, .… (1 Tim 3:9 NKJV) holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.

  15. Is Christianity passive or active?--Cont’d • What is the nature of our warfare? (2 Cor 10:4 NKJV) For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, (Eph 6:12 NKJV) For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. (2 Tim 2:3 NKJV) You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. (2 Tim 2:4 NKJV) No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. (1 Tim 6:12 NKJV) Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, ...

  16. Is Christianity passive or active?--Cont’d • What is “the faith”? (Rom 16:26 NKJV) but now has been made manifest, ... for obedience to the faith; (2 Cor 13:5 NKJV) Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. .... (Gal 1:23 NKJV) ... "He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith which he once tried to destroy." (Phil 1:27 NKJV) ... striving together for the faith of the gospel, (1 Tim 1:2 NKJV) To Timothy, a true son in the faith .... (1 Tim 3:9 NKJV) holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. (1 Tim 4:1 NKJV) ... some will depart from the faith …. (1 Tim 6:10 NKJV) ... some have strayed from the faith ….

  17. Is Christianity passive or active?--Cont’d • Can a person reject “the faith”? (1 Tim 1:19 NKJV) having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, (1 Tim 4:1-3 NKJV) Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. (1 Tim 6:10 NKJV) For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

  18. What to Remember From Chapter 1 • Paul’s letters are authoritative doctrine for all the church. • We must distinguish between true doctrine and men’s teachings. • Paul’s conversion demonstrates that none are beyond salvation through God’s wonderful grace and mercy. • Christianity is a good warfare that must be pursued and not deserted.
