Program Observations and Meeting Agenda

This program covers recent selections, the increasing maturity of LCLUC social science aspects, and the South-Southeast Asia Regional Initiative. It also explores the challenges and potential of developing a regional LU Science Initiative. The agenda includes sessions on LCLUC in mountainous regions, MuSLI project updates, international programs and capacity building, and a wrap-up session.

  1. Program Observations and Meeting Agenda Chris Justice LCLUC Project Scientist

  2. Program Observations • Recent Selections • Increasing maturity of LCLUC social science aspects – some projects being led by social scientists • South-Southeast Asia Regional Initiative • Preparatory Syntheses (2012-2015) – LU/Carbon, Urban, Forest/Ag • 2015 S. Asia Projects emphasis on forest (6), urban (1), agricultural land use (1), LU/health (1) • 2016 SARI SE Asia emphases TBD • Next Phase – Thursday Vadrevu presentation • Building a regional program from individual unconnected NASA proposals (where the sum is to be more than the parts) > the contribution in the context of the larger body of regional science > critical role of regional science meetings to understand engage/partner w. regional scientists(co-funded meetings) • Special Editions providing science synthesis-paper opportunities (Thank You – Krishna) • Real interest from National Science Partners to further engage – connection to other opportunities (Peer, etc) • Interest in understanding how to use NASA data for LU Science

  3. Observations Continued • Synthesis Proposals (in process of changing this element) • 2016 Regional specific drivers (SE US), Island Systems, Land rush/grabs (+ 2015 Brown et al.) – future special edition? • 2016 Caucasus Component - emphases (TBD) • MODIS > MuSLI ? • New high temporal resolution moderate resolution capability (S2, S1) – a potential game changer for LCLUC science • First round funding was for prototyping • Second round ‘product generation’ + additional prototyping • Complementing not duplicating European efforts - as significant European investments being made • Focus on unique contributions from moderate resolution capabilities Not duplicating HLS functionality • Challenge of developing useful unfunded-partnerships – strengthening the activities – a coordinated Science Team • Challenge of incomplete high frequency coverage • Challenge of Funding Volume Data Processing - Exploring link to NASA’s Cloud Computing initiative

  4. Looking Forward • Regional Initiatives Beyond SARI (2019/20>)? • Compelling science case for a regional LU Science Initiative • Two potential candidates – further Discussion Tomorrow • New LU Thematic Areas for future calls? • e.g. Rangelands - further Discussion Tomorrow • Potential Interdisciplinary Science Topics ? • Stronger Relationship w. partner programs e.g. • GLP Focus Areas: • Forecasting in the land sector • Managing land use interactions and tradeoffs • Land conflicts

  5. Program Support Issues • LCLUC Program Web Site – PLEASE update your profile and project publications regularly – Share your data sets (Metadata page) – Share your research news, media highlights – Share your PhD successes • LCLUC Webinars & Newsletter – Be ready with your results to present at the webinar when requested – Submit your webinar ‘article’ prior to the Webinar for newsletter publication – Help us promote the webinars in your Dept. and with int. partners – Submit short newsletter write ups on papers, special editions, meetings • LCLUC Facebook Page – Follow us on social media for latest updates!
