  16. Comments • “Please do! I would have to pay someone to take me to the doctor. Please provide this!” • “It’s rare now that people are abstinent; it would be helpful to everyone.” • “I need birth control.” • “Because it would be easier for people who don’t have a car and are far away from home.”

  17. Comments • “I think this would help women in the dorms stay secure and informed.” • “Because I have no insurance.” • “So I don’t have to go all the way back to my home town.” • “I believe it would be a lot better for UALR to be a lot more active to prevent pregnancies and diseases.”

  18. Conclusions • Most of the female students in East Hall are sexually active (75%). • Half of these students report using condoms “always;” however, half report using condoms “sometimes” or “never.” • 62% of the sexually active students report being on another form of birth control; however, 38% are not.

  19. Conclusions • Only 15 (30%) of the students who are on another form of birth control have been to see a local provider. • Transportation is a concern for ½ of the students surveyed. • 38% of the sexually active female students surveyed are not on another form of birth control. (n = 30) (Based upon the total # of female residents in East Hall, n = +/- 60.)

  20. Impact • Unintended pregnancies • Pregnant students at increased risk of not completing college • Limited financial earning potential

  21. Plan • Provide information & maps about existing ADH family planning clinics and how to access care. • Provide family planning information and question/answer sessions to address gaps in knowledge about risks of pregnancy and STIs. • Explore UALR Health Services becoming a Family Planning Waiver provider site.

  22. Family Planning Waiver Provider Site • In order to address the need for family planning services among childbearing women of AR, Arkansas has a Family Planning Waiver program in place. • Purpose: to provide Family Planning Medicaid Insurance to women and, thereby, increase their access to care. • All students who are US citizens qualify.

  23. Family Planning Waiver Provider Site • As APNs with percriptive authority, we qualify as providers under this program. • UALR Health Services would need to submit an application to become a nurse practitioner provider group. • Students would complete a simple two-page application and submit a copy of their birth certificate.

  24. Family Planning Waiver Provider Site • All services would be billable, including: - APN time - Labs (done by our lab & outsource lab) - Prescriptions

  25. Evaluation • Follow-up with anonymous surveys. • Track numbers of unintended pregnancies. • Analyze cost/benefit of program.
