  1. 13.2E THE RESULTS OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION The French Revolution can be summarized in the motto: Liberty, Equality, and nationalism. Liberty provided civil rights (e.g., speech) to all and the political franchise (right to vote & hold office) to all free men. Equality meant all were equal before the law. Economically, the middle class emerged as the big winners, but most peasants also got their own land, making them more politically conservative. However, equality meant dividing inheritances equally, which led to lower birth rates and slow population growth for France compared to other countries, in particular Germany. Nationalism included everyone united by a common language, culture, history, and geography, but also excluded everyone else. The state has competed with the family and church for the loyalty of its citizens through mandatory public education and legalized civil marriage and divorce, thus contributing to various social problems. Its exclusiveness has also created divisions between nations, which along with the worries about France’s relatively declining population, would help lead to WWI, the most important event in history. By 1871 France has established a stable democracy Liberty: Civil rights: freed. of speech, press, etc. Vote for all men & eventually women Nationalism: Equality: Economic: Peasants own land  Conserv. Legal: all Fr. equal before the law. Includes everyone in the nation Excludes those outside of nation All sons have equal right to inheritance Primogeniture outlawed State competes w/ Church & family for loyalty of its citizens Lower birth rate to avoid splitting family lands Civil marriages, divorce, & mand. public educ. Slower pop. growth in 1800s than neighbors, esp. Ger. Weakens bonds & influence of family and religion Fewer French emigrate to Amer’s, etc. Worries about growing threat of Germany Nat’l loyalties international tensions More crime & social misbehavior World War I
