  3. 2010 – 2011 Demographics • Grades 6 – 8 • 486 students • 43.4% African American 46.5% Hispanic 8% White • 50% New Staff on Campus

  4. 2008 Academically Unacceptable • 2009 Academically Acceptable with TPM, Unacceptable Without TPM • 2008 Missed AYP • 2009 Missed AYP

Obstacles to Overcome in 2010 • 7th Principal in ten years (3rd in last three years) • Had to replaced 50% of staff who had resigned during 2009 school year • 50% of our students were new because of desegregation order with Department of Justice • Moved into a new campus at end of July • No student schedule requests from prior year • Basically a non-existent extracurricular program • No Academic UIL team • 6 PTA members • Almost 200 arrests made by Longview PD previous year • Low teacher morale

How can a partnership benefit your students? • Helps in building self esteem for students • Every student feels like they are part of your community • Continue education past high school • Relationships are formed • Assist students in learning to deal with adults • Hold all students accountable – academics and discipline

What the school can do… • The school has to reach out to the community • Church, pastors, small businesses, corporations, non-profits • Host a luncheon or breakfast first, to introduce your school to the future stakeholders • Share your vision and mission, invite students and teachers to speak, present and serve • Communicate, communicate, communicate!

  8. What the businesses can do • Mentoring program for your students • Incentives for students • A/B Honor Roll • Academic improvement (not A/B students) • Luncheons for staff • Surprise goodies for staff • Parent Involvement Assistance • Professional mentor for you and your staff

  9. Results • Your Principal and teachers expect me to continue my education beyond high school? 100% of African Americans “YES” • Discipline referrals down • Longview PD arrests and citations: • 2009/2010: 157 2010/2011: 53
