  2. Purpose of listening to other types of music • Empathise with others: Find value in what others might find odd, alien, or implausible; perceive sensitively on the basis of prior indirect experience.

  3. Barrier to Empathy? • “Bad” prior direct experience • “Knowledge” subconsciously influenced by others around us • “Knowledge” subconsciously influenced by what we have read • Leads to PREJUDICE

  4. First Impressions: • Who could possibly be the “performers”? • Where could such music be heard? • Which aspect(s) of the sound in the music attracts or repels you? • Which aspect(s) of the sound in the music is/are similar or different as compared to the music you are familiar with? • What is the music trying to express? • What is the music used for?

  5. Challenge your “First Impressions” and Form “New Impressions” • How did you get these “First Impressions”? • Try to understand the music (a sense of empathy towards the performers) through • research • listening attentively • Form “new understanding / impressions” • Make an Informed Decision
