  1. Routers

  2. How Routers Work • The router is most responsible for allowing the Internet to exist. • Routers are specialized computers that allow you to use the internet while other people are using the internet.

  3. Sending Messages Routers are devices that let messages flow between networks, rather than within networks.

  4. Transmitting Packet Internet data, such as Web pages, a downloaded file or an e-mail message, travels over a system known as a packet-switching network. The data in a message or file is broken up into packages about 1,500 bytes long. Each data package, called a packet, is then sent off to its destination by the best available route.

  5. Directing Traffic • One part of directing traffic is with a configuration table • A configuration table is a collection of information that knows which addresses belong to which network • It also handles prioritizes connections between networks for quicher flowing traffic.

  6. Different Types of Routers • Simple Routers • Large Routers

  9. Directing InformationAcross a Network • Routers needs an address and a network structure to send information through a network. • The logical address and network structure help determine whether information is compatible with computers with a network.

  10. MAC Address • A MAC address is used to match up with the logical address so no mistakes will be made when passing information through your computer.

  11. Bytes • Routers have to know how many bytes are in a package of data. • After the bytes get to their destination, they must get reassembled. • Depending on the size of the file, the network could run slower for other users if the file is too large.
