  2. Summary Two main messages: To the collaboration: The EM/MME group can be a strong partner, we can integrate and follow-up a team of designers. To the groups: we are ready to start the work when you can. Diego Perini 28.09.2011

  3. How we work: on machines, equipment, detectors CERN-wide in close collaboration with groups (e.g. magnets, RF, instrumentation etc.). EN – MME Project Office: staffs, Industrial support contracts , Project Associates (for LHC) Workshop + subcontracting Metallurgy Metrology Integration studies are carried out by EN-MEF Also available We are interested in finding partner institutes: ELENA could be an occasion

The ELENA ring project - boundary conditions • T0 of the project: today • Duration: 3.5 years for design, production, tests and installation • ProjectOffice estimation 13 + 4 FTEs Scenario 1: One senior designer (staff) starting from January 2012 plus 10 – 13 FTE from the collaboration. (Similar to the MEDAUSTROM scheme) Scenario 2: One senior designer (staff) starting from January 2012 plus funding to employ industrial support staff (change of existing contracts? ).   5. How to be effective • The designers will be physically present in our project office. • The CAD + Smarteam software used for the project will be CATIA V5. In this moment we use the release 19. We will move to release 20 during the project. • A training period will be necessary for each external collaborator to get used of CERN software and procedures. The possibility to exchange files from different CAD systems is very limited. According to the producers everything is perfect but then in practice it does not work. You just import “dead” geometries. It is therefore mandatory to use CATIA V5 from the start. Structure the documentation and technical production from the start, integrate this with the existing CERN system in order to preserve long term memory. Diego Perini 28.09.2011

Qualification of the designers • Technician in mechanical engineering • 3 years or more experience in drafting in a design office or • Completed apprenticeship as draftsman • 3 years or more experience in mechanical engineering If possible, knowledge of CATIA software. Otherwise some extra time for training and then get operational. Diego Perini 28.09.2011
