  2. History of Honduras • In 1576, the Spaniards, in 1821 found Mayan ruins in Honduras. • Honduras became a colony of Spain. • Then, in 1821, Honduras gained independence from Spain.

  3. Land • Did you know that 80% of Honduras is made of mountains? • Honduras has a very tropical climate.

  4. People • Nearly all the people in Honduras are Roman Catholic. • 90% of the people are mestizos.

  5. Economy • Honduras is one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere. • Their economy is based upon farming. • Seafood, minerals, palm oil, fruit, lumber, and beef are main exports. • The USA is the number one trading partner with Honduras.

  6. Government • The president is head of state and head of the government. • Honduras is governed under the constitution of 1982 as amended. • The unicameral legislature, the National Congress, has 128 members. • The president and the members of the National Congress are elected for 4-year terms.
