  1. TALK OF THE DAY The Holy Prophet Muhammad(SAW) says: “Stomach is the home of diseases and Diet is the main medicine”. (IMAM IBN-E_QAYYEM KITABUTIBB)

  2. Laboratory Equipments

  3. THINK OF ANY MACHINE

  4. OPERATION MANUAL Supplied by the manufacturer is required to be read carefully before the operation. Kind of fuel Method of operation Rest / cooling Maintenance/Repair Spare parts/Fuse Whom to contact in case of trouble shooting

  5. HUMAN BODY

  6. The Human body is a biological machine and like all machines, it needs fuel to do work like running, thinking and reading etc

  7. But remember that The human body is the only machine for which there are no spare parts.

  8. DIET AND NUTRITION Guidance provided by its creator (Ahsanulkhaliqeen) and his Messengers, especially the last of the Prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (SAW)

  9. Health, according to WHO Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or weakness.

  10. This widely accepted definition was expanded in mid 70’s , as other components were included: intellectual, environmental, and spiritual health. • In more recent years, this statement has been modified to include the ability to lead a socially and economically productive life.

  11. Critical analysis of these definitions Health cannot be defined as a state but must be seen as a process of continuous adjustment to the changing demands of living

  12. Spiritual Health Spiritual health, means an individual’s ability to differentiate between right and wrong and resolve to lead a more righteous life, free of deception, dishonesty and selfishness. Islam promotes Spiritual health.

Eat of what is on earth, Lawful and good; and do not follow the footsteps of the devil, for he is to you a clear enemy. (Al-Baqarah :168 )

  14. Nutrition • يَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا أُحِلَّ لَهُمْ قُلْ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ • They ask thee what is lawful to them (as food). Say: lawful for you are (all) things good and pure: (Al-Maeda : 04 )

  15. Moderation in eating • كُلُوا مِنْ طَيِّبَاتِ مَا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ وَلا تَطْغَوْا فِيهِ فَيَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبِيوَمَنْ يَحْلِلْ عَلَيْهِ غَضَبِي فَقَدْ هَوَى • Eat of the good things We have provided for your sustenance, but commit no excess therein, lest My Wrath should justly descend on you: and those on whom descends My Wrath do perish indeed. (Ta-Ha :81 )

  16. No excessive eating • َكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلاتُسْرِفُوا إِنَّهُ لا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ • Eat and drink: But waste not by excess, for Allah loveth not the wasters. (Al-Araf :31)

  17. ADVISE OF PROPHET (SAW) In one Hadith, Prophet (SAW) advised to keep 1/3 stomach empty when we finish the meal.

  18. Emphasis on fruits and vegetables • لَهُمْ فِيهَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَلَهُمْ مَا يَدَّعُونَ • (Every) fruit (enjoyment) will be there for them; they shall have whatever they call for. (Ya-Seen 57) • لَكُمْ فِيهَا فَاكِهَةٌ كَثِيرَةٌ مِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ • Ye shall have therein abundance of fruit, from which ye shall have satisfaction.043.073 (Az-Zukhruf)

  19. Emphasis on fruits and vegetables • وَمِنْ ثَمَرَاتِ النَّخِيلِ وَالأعْنَابِ تَتَّخِذُونَ مِنْهُ سَكَرًا وَرِزْقًا حَسَنًا إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَةً لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ • And from the fruit of the date-palm and the vine, ye get out wholesome drink and food: behold, in this also is a sign for those who are wise. (An-Nahl : 67)

  20. In another approach, Islam demands from its followers the idea of total Abstinence of food and drinks for one whole month from dawn to sunset. “ O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that ye may learn self restraint.” i.e. to have Taqwa ( Al- Baqara)

  21. With regard to fasting, the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “ Fast (the month of Ramadan) so as to heal your bodies from diseases”

  22. Value of exercise in maintaining health • Prophet (S.A.W) advised all Muslims to teach their children : Swimming, Archery and Horse riding. • He (S.A.W.) used to walk at fast pace • He (S.A.W) used to work with his hands whether at home, in the kitchen, or with his companions collecting wood for fire,

  23. Affliction with diseases • مَا أَصَابَكَ مِنْ حَسَنَةٍ فَمِنَ اللَّهِ وَمَا أَصَابَكَ مِنْ سَيِّئَةٍ فَمِنْ نَفْسِكَ وَأَرْسَلْنَاكَ لِلنَّاسِ رَسُولا وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ شَهِيدًا • Whatever good, happens to you, is from Allah; but whatever evil happens to you, is from your own soul. and We have sent you as a messenger to (instruct) mankind. And enough is Allah for a witness. (An-Nisa :79)

  24. Many of the common chronic illnesses, CHD, hypertension, DM, peptic ulcer disease, obesity and depression have common man-made etiology i.e. Energy rich food, too much food, too much salt, too much sugar , stress , smoking and alcoholism but less or no physical activity.

  25. Makruh & Mustahab • Islam declares makruh or undesirable all those things and practices, which may harm the health but are neither usually fatal, nor lead to any physical handicap like blindness, paralysis etc • Islam declares Mustahab or desirable or obligatory all those things and practices that have beneficial effect on the health of the individual or society in general.

  26. What to do when faced with disease? • وإِنْ يَمْسَسْكَ اللَّهُ بِضُرٍّ فَلا كَاشِفَ لَهُ إِلا هُوَ وَإِنْ يَمْسَسْكَ بِخَيْرٍ فَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ • If Allah touch you with affliction, none can remove it but He; if He touches you with happiness, He have the power over all things. (Al-Anaam :17 )

  27. Treatment • عنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ دَاءً إِلَّا أَنْزَلَ لَهُ شِفَاءً • The Prophet said, There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its treatment.

  28. Treatment • Narrated UsamahibnSharik: • The desert Arabs came from here and there. They asked: Apostle of Allah, should we make use of medical treatment? He replied: • Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it, with the exception of one disease, namely old age. (Abu Dawood)

  29. Therapeutic modalities • Natural products including food and herbs which we find in Prophetic Medicine. • Medical and surgical products and techniques discovered through research and studies. • Historically Muslim physicians took a lead in this field like IbnSina, IbnRushd, Al Razi. • Contemporary Medicine and Muslim Physicians role • Dua

  30. Energy Metabolism

  31. Where from this Energy Comes? Food How we obtain? We have already studied carbohydrates and lipid metabolism.

  32. We know that: • Biologic systems are essentially Isothermic. • Uses chemical energy to facilitate living process.

  33. Oxidation of Foodstuff Occurs in three stages: • Digestion in the GIT converting the macromolecules in to small units. Primary Metabolism • Absorption of these smaller units and decomposition into smaller components and their ultimate oxidation into CO2. • Secondary Metabolism, occurring in the cell, where reducing equivalents are produced in the citric acid cycle.(NADH,FADH2).

  34. Tertiary Metabolism These reducing equivalents enter into the Electron Transport Chain (ETC) (Respiratory Chain), where energy is released, used for: Vital functions of the body Thermogenesis Physical Activity And if any extra, is stored.

  35. Islamic concepts of health and Nutrition • Nutrition doesn’t mean just physical nutrition. • Nutritional needs are of the SOUL, of the MIND and lastly of the BODY

  36. CONCLUSION • Good food must contain three essential components: • Nutritional benefits and efficiency in producing the needed energy. • Lightness for the stomach • Ease of digestion

  37. CONCLUSION • And then defining moderation, the Prophetic guidance on the best of common diets is: "one third food, one third water and one third air." Because, when the stomach is filled with food, it will not be able to take in water, and when food and water exceed their recommended level, one may suffer from pulmonary difficulties, resulting in stress and exhaustion from lungs being unable to easily deliver oxygenated blood to the left atrium of the heart.

  38. CONCLUSION • One will also feel heaviness in his body, his heart and spirit will experience languor and drowsiness and his limbs will fail to obey him in performing his basic religious duties. • Hence a filled stomach is damaging to one's body, heart and spirit. • Moderation is the path of good health and the body benefits from moderate and nutritious meals.
