  4. VIS-À-VIS OTHER PROFESSIONS • Lawyers ~ Chambering • PTD Officers ~ INTAN • Doctors ~ Housemanship • Lecturers ~ ? ‘Unqualified Teachers’

  5. BASIC TRAITS OF A LECTURER • Eager for constant upgrading • Being ‘superhuman’ • No resting on laurels • Possess intense interest in teaching

  6. FIRST MEETING WITH STUDENTS • A lecturer must introduce himself at the beginning of the semester • Establish bond • No more strangers • Make them feel at home

  7. RULES AND OBJECTIVES • Rules and regulations • Maintain harmony in the classroom • Your expectations • Objectives of your course

  8. THE PLAYGROUNDS • Lawyers ~ Courts • Diplomats ~ Meetings • Engineers ~ Construction Sites • Lecturers ~ Classrooms

  9. CLASSROOMS • Central to formal higher education • A gathering place for a specific activity at a specific time • Physical outlook needs to be attractive • Spiritually conducive to learning

  10. BASIC KNOWLEDGE A LECTURER SHOULD HAVE • Philosophy ~ Epistemology • Psychology~ Empiricism, Rationalism • Empiricism ~ Behaviorism • Rationalism ~ Cognitivism

  12. BASIC KNOWLEDGE • Three Domains of Learning: • Cognitive ~ what we know or think • Psychomotor ~ what we do physically • Affective ~ what we feel or what attitudes we have

  13. MODES OF IMPARTING KNOWLEDGE • Lectures • Discussions • Seminars, Tutorials, Advising, and Mentoring • Group work

LEARNING THEORIES • Behaviorism ~ Based on observable changes in behaviour ~ Pavlov, Thorndike,Watson,Skinner • Cognitivism ~ Based on the thought behind the behaviour ~Jean Piaget, Bruner • Constructivism ~ Based on the premise that we all construct our own perspective of the world, through individual experiences and schema ~ Bartlett

  15. CORE OF TEACHING • Well-pepared • Voice ~ crescendo vs staccato • Effective boardwork • Knowledge of new technology

  16. QUALITIES OF AN EFFECTIVE LECTURER • Knowledgeable • Caring • A leader • An actor/actress • Proud of the job • Healthy • Smartly dressed

  18. It appears that we have now come a full circle, government servants should no longer expect a second career when they retire except perhaps doing voluntary and charitable work. And what about respect? Only school teachers (and lecturers) seem to command eternal respect from their past pupils (students) even if the pupil (student) has become a prime minister.
