Some considerations for underlining and highlighting: • Avoid the most typical mistake students make in marking textbooks: over-marking (underlining and highlighting too much). • You cannot know what is important in a paragraph or section until you have finished reading. Read first, and underline only after you have identified the important ideas. You can do this section by section. • Read and think; then underline or highlight selectively.

  3. 2. Know the kinds of things you should • underline or highlight. • Underline or highlight the TOPIC of a paragraph. • Underline or highlight the MAIN IDEA of a paragraph • if it is stated directly. • Underline or highlight IMPORTANT TERMS or DEFINITIONS. • Not more than 1/6 of the text

  4. How do I annotate? • Write in the margins or in any other white space in your textbook. Don’t keep your book clean. • Remember that you’ll be going over your textbook chapters weeks or even months after you read them the first time. Your annotations will improve your learning and save you time in the long run.

  5. Examples of abbreviations and symbols you can use in the margins: defDefinition. Use def when an important item is defined. 1,2,3… Numbers. Use numbers when an author gives items in a list or series, or when you want to make the primary supporting details stand out. * Use an asterisk to mark important information, such as information the instructor has indicated will be on the test. ?Question mark. Use this when you do not understand something and need to come back to it for further study or to get help with it.

  6. What should I write in the margins? • Main Ideas • Your comments and reactions • Descriptions of the text structure • Notes about possible test questions • Short summaries • Key words ALWAYS USE YOUR OWN WORDS IN YOUR MARGIN NOTES!
