  2. FRANK WHITTLE • Frank whittle was born in June 1, 1907 Earlsdon, Coventry, England , Frank died in august 9, 1996.

  3. ERALY LIFE • He went to school at Peterhouse, university of Cambridge. Whittle won a scholarship to a secondary school which in due course became leamington college. He developed practical engineering skills while helping in his father workshop, reading about astronomy, engineering, turbines, and theory of flight.

  4. invention (Jet engine) Frank Whittle invent the jet engine, he excelled in his studies and became an accomplished pilot. While writing his thesis there he formulated the fundamental concept that led to the creation of the jet engine, taking out a patent on his design in 1930.

  5. When and where was invented? • Royal air force pilot frank whittle patented the jet engine in 1930, proving its feasibility mathematically. In 1937 whittle built an engine and ran it on the ground for the first time. Patent number 2404334and date of patent issuance July 6,1946.

  6. Jet engine • Frank Whittle jet engine transformed travel. The jet engine has allowed millions of people now to do something that was barely thinkable just 70 years ago - crossing the Atlantic at speed.

  7. Why the invention important? • Using newly available alloys that were strong and light, he produced the first viable jet engine to be successfully tested in a laboratory. Now it had to be put onto a plane and the respective safety measures taken - as with all new planes.  jet engine allowed passenger planes to get bigger so that more people could be carried on them.

  8. The invention been improved • The Boeing 707 entered service in 1958. It was safe and allowed people to travel distances at speeds that would had been impossible just 10 years earlier. Whittle’s invention has transformed the world.

  9. facts • Invented the jet engine. • Eldest son of a factory foremanMarried in 1930, divorced in 1976. Married second wife, Hazel, in the USA in the same year. Two children, David and Ian. • Cause of death, cancer.

  10. Facts about the invention • 1923RAF Cranwell, aircraft apprentice. • 1926Selected for officer and pilot training. • 1928 Writes his final thesis for the RAF College - contains the initial germ of the idea for jet propulsion. Becomes a commissioned officer. • 1929Develops the initial idea of the jet engine - using a gas turbine to produce a propelling jet. • 1930Applies for a patent for the jet engine concept - "a reaction motor suitable for aircraft propulsion" (granted April 1931). The idea is ignored by the Air Ministry.
