  6. PhD Project

  7. PhD Project • Theme • Northern periphery tourism • Ecologically sensitive areas • Aim • to increase the knowledge and understanding of management challenges towards sustainable tourism in ecological vulnerable protected areas • Outline: 4 pillars

  8. PhD Project • 1st Pillar: Literature Study • What has been the development of protected area management over the last 20 years • Two case studies: Vatnajökull NP (Iceland) and Daisetsuzan NP (Japan) • How does “theory” and “reality” meet?

  9. PhD Project

  10. PhD Project • 2nd Pillar: Actors network at protected areas • Specific Aim: analyzing stakeholders’ role within the management of sustainable tourism in PAs by mapping all actors and their strengths and weaknesses • Who are the stakeholders, what is their connection, what is the information they share, and in which direction

  11. PhD Project • Stakeholders vs. Actors

  12. PhD Project • 3rd Pillar: Visitor impact assessment • Assess potential environmental impacts from visitors in PAs by: • 1. evaluate how trampling influences ecological sustainability • 2. examine tourist guide opinion of tourism environmental impact in PA of Iceland • 3. explore how information on visitors impact reach stakeholders

  13. (c) Hıdır Celep 2012

  14. PhD Project (Tomczyk, 2011)

  15. PhD Project • Methods: Overview • Combination of: • Environmental sensitivity of the areas • Assessment of major hiking trails • Case Studies • Iceland (northern part of Vatnajökull NP) • Japan (Daisetsuzan NP and Mt. Tarumae) • Research Interest: • Easy-to-use method • Climate parameter, environmental sensitivity analysis, and the assessment of hiking trails?

  16. PhD Project • Methods: Details • Foundation of the Environmental Sensitivity • Ecological Sensitivity Analysis • ecological parameters: top soil, vegetation, slope angle • Extension: inclusion of climate parameters • Temperature and humidity • Assessment of Hiking Trails • continuous sampling interval (100m) • Trail Width & Trails Impact Zone • Trail Depth; Vegetation Change; Erosion

  17. Results: Iceland

  18. Results: Japan

  19. PhD project • 4th Pillar: Stakeholders complexity assessment • Explore the role and relationship between different stakeholders as regard tourism management in protected areas by: • 1. assess opinion of different stakeholders about nature conservation, tourism development and visitor impact • 2. use system dynamic and resilience concepts to analyse the complex interrelationship between the different stakeholders (based on results in other pillars)

  20. PhD Project • Future • Expansion of research to other national parks • Implementation of results in the management of the Vatnajökull NP and other national parks • Any questions? Comments? Did I loose everyone already?
