  2. TIPS ON NOTE TAKING: GREEN - Don't write it down if you don't want. It is there 
for to read and make a mental note. BLUE - You should write this information down, but put it in 
your own words. Don't worry about coping it exactly. Put 
it in a way that you'll remember. BLACK - You need to write this down. It is important. If 
you can find a way to write it using less words that okay, but 
make sure you are getting this information in your notes. RED - This is very important and needs to be written in your 
notes EXACTLY as it is on the board.

  10. Revival of Trade and Towns What caused the revival of trade and towns? Thinking about what goods and services a medieval town would have, what would you sell or do?

  12. The Plow and the Horse * A new plow had iron blades that could cut through thick soil. With them people could farm more land. * Horses were faster than oxen and did more work for the amount of food they ate. * With the new plow and horse peasants were able to cultivate much more land.

  13. Effects of New Farming Methods Why do you think that farmers during the middle ages used the three-field system?

Effects of New Farming Methods * Two big advantages of the three-field system. 1) Increased the amount of land planted each year. 2) Protected farmers from starvation if one of the two crops failed. * Using these new techniques the food supply increased (surplus). * More food and better diets lead to people being healthier and living longer.

Specialization and Trade * As the population and wealth increased so did the demand for trade goods. * The demand for these goods encouraged labor specialization and long-distance trade. * More trade meant that people no longer had to use just the goods that their village blacksmith or carpenter could make.

  17. Growing Towns What images come to mind when you think of a medieval town?

  18. Growing Towns * The revival of trade specifically led to the growth of town. * Middle Ages towns often were religious centers. * In time merchants/craft workers set-up shops in the towns. * Many of these merchants/craft workers set up guilds.

  19. Guilds Why would being part of a guild be a good thing for a working person? And have you ever heard of a union?

  20. Guilds * Guilds did four specific things: 1) They maintained the quality of work. 2) They set prices. 3) Established training programs for new members. 4) Controlled who guild members could sell too. * The steps to become a Master Craftsmen in a guild were: 1) Apprentice 2) Journeyman

  21. Important things to remember: * The reason for the increase in farming was because of the use of the iron plow, the three-field system and new farming techniques. * Guilds set prices, maintained quality of work and established training programs.
