  2. WHAT IT IS A literary and artistic movement that originated in the late 19th century that influenced European and American literature of the 20th century to express individual emotional experience through subtle use of symbolized language

MORE INFO • Emerged after the Industrial Revolution in France • There was a rejection of Realism and Naturalism, so they favored the imaginative and spiritual. • Art was considered subjective, ambiguous, and mysterious • Literature should represent absolute truths indirectly • Influenced 20th century literature, transitioning Realism  Modernism • fin de siècle (French): End of the Century, in hope of a new beginning

Most controversial play is ‘Salome’, denied due to biblical content Actress Sarah Bernhardt would have played the lead role. The dined with other famous writers and poets such as John Butler Yeats.   9. Paul Verlaine One of the greatest representatives of the fin de siècle in international and French poetry. Born on March 30, 1844 in Mertz France Began writing at an early age. Was influenced by the Parnassian movement Descended into drug addiction, alcoholism, and poverty In 1894 elected as France’s “Prince of Poets”
