  4. School board authority/accountability • The Alberta Legislature, through the |School Act, delegates authority for governance of education to locally elected school boards. • Public accountability is entrenched through the election of school trustees. The next election is October 21, 2013.

  5. School board accountability School boards are accountable • as elected officials to voters • as stewards of public dollars to taxpayers • as employers to staff • as the people entrusted with the care and education of children to parents and the community

  6. The role of school trustees School boards’ core responsibility is tounderstand and reflect the local community’s values and priorities for schools. We consult our communities and gather feedback and input as we plan policies and programs. We strive to integrate information from different perspectives in our decision making. Important: An individual trustee acting alone has no authority. We only have power to make decisions when we sit together as a corporate board.

  8. What do school boards do? As politicians elected by and accountable to our local communities school boards • plan for the jurisdiction, setting priorities for our school system in light of community wishes, available resources and sound educational practice • set goals for the jurisdiction ensuring education stays in step with today’s world • hire and evaluate the superintendent of schools (Our CEO) • adopt an annual budget for the school system

  9. What do school boards do? As politicians elected by and accountable to our local communities school boards • develop policy to guide district administration towards jurisdiction goals • communicate with our community on behalf of the jurisdiction • educate others to ensure education is the top public priority and to make the community aware of the jurisdiction’s achievements • gather information to make sound decisions • hear appeals of decisions that people feel are unfair

Be a school trustee… Make important decisions… that affect communities and students: • Through school boards, the local community has a say in what children learn • School board decisions affect the direction and quality of our local schools • School boards respond to local issues • School boards shape tomorrow’s citizens

  11. Be a school trustee.. Make important decisions…that affect businesses: • School boards are major (often the largest) employers and vendors in community • School boards develop young workers • School boards offer opportunities for input and partnership

  12. Be a school trustee.. Make important that affect non-parent taxpayers: • School boards are producing tomorrow’s caregivers and leaders. • Good schools contribute to our community’s reputation. • Beyond the 3Rs, schools teach children life skills and quality character traits.
