  1. Welcome to Highcroft Drive Elementary’s Kindergarten Orientation “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

  2. Philosophy of Kindergarten • Kindergarten means “ a garden where children grow” • We focus on the individual child - meeting them where they are and taking them as far as possible • Child’s development: cognitive, social, emotional, physical, etc. • Each child’s self-concept is very important

  3. Curriculum“Provide developmentally appropriate activities that nurture the child’s physical, mental, social and emotional growth.” • Common Core Standards • Unit approach, integrated themes • Comprehensive introduction to all areas of learning * Reading * Developmental Centers * Writing * Whole group * Math * Small group * Science * One-on-one instruction * Social Studies * Arts and Technology

Social Development • Listens without interrupting • Follows directions • Shows self-confidence • Carries out responsibilities • Follows the school rules • Shows respect for others and their work • Takes care of classroom materials • Displays good manners • Self care- from zipping to personal care in restroom

  6. A Day in Kindergarten Arrival activities Recess Group time Snack Language Arts- Social Studies Reading/Writing Science Developmental Centers Lunch Math Specials: Art, P.E., Music, Spanish Technology, Media, Reader’s Theater

  7. Staggered EntryJuly 28, 29, 30, 31 • Your child will attend just one day the first week of school • Teacher gets to know the children; allows for a more gradual adjustment to kindergarten • Initial assessments will be completed • Create heterogeneous classes

  8. Getting to Know You • Meet the Teacher will be Aug.1 from 1:30-3p.m. • First full day of kindergarten will be Aug. 4

  9. Arrival and Dismissal • Children may enter the building at 8:45a.m. First bell rings at 9:10a.m. Announcements and pledge begin at 9:15a.m. • School is dismissed at 3:45p.m. • Walkers enter and leave the building by the side doors. • Carpoolers enter and leave the building by the front doors. Carpool tags can be picked up in the cafeteria on “Meet the Teacher” days. • Before & After School Program is available through the YMCA

  10. Bus Transportation • All new students must register between May 30, 2014 and June 6, 2014 • The link to the online registration is: www.wcpss.net/parents/transportation • To register you need: • Student name, parent name, address, email address, Student ID number, phone number

  11. New students will mirror older sibling’s service • If you wish to add bus transportation and did not have it last year, you must register online • THE FIRST 30 DAYS OF SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION IS ONLY TO AND FROM YOUR HOME ADDRESS GIVEN AT REGISTRATION

  12. Helpful Information • Be positive about school; children will follow your lead • Bring supplies on “Meet the Teacher” Day – Aug 1st • Send children in clothes that they can manage (no zippers, etc.) • Each child needs a full-sized backpack (large enough for a folder) – no rolling bags please

  13. Write your child’s name on every personal item • Send checks or pay online to cover the cost of lunch • Notify us of any transportation changes in writing • Child must be “fever-free” for 24 hours before returning to school • Please send a note or email when your child is absent • Join the PTA, get involved, volunteer • Read, read, read to your child

  14. Dates to Remember • Staggered Start: July 28, 29, 30, and 31. Your child will attend for ONE full day this week. • Friday, August 1-Come by and “Meet Your Teacher” from 1:30-3p.m. This is also the best time to drop off school supplies. • Monday, August 4-First day for all kindergartners
