  1. Oersted’s Discovery Hans Oersted first discovered in 1819 that an electric current can influence a compass, establishing the new science of magnetism. The magnitude of the force, F, on a charge, q, moving through a magnetic field, B, with a speed, v, can be calculated by: F = BqvsinΘ or F = Bqv if B and v are at right angles to one another. The direction of the magnetic force on a moving charge can be determined by a “right-hand rule” for positive charge flow.

  2. Oersted’s Discovery and the “right-hand rule”. Let: Your extended fingers represent the direction of the magnetic field, B. Your thumb points in the direction of the charge movement, v. The palm of your hand point in the direction of the force, F, on the moving charge.

  3. Oersted’s discovery applied to electric currents. From F = Bqv we can also show that: F = B (q/t) (vt) so, F = Bil Where i represents electrical current, and l represents the length of the current carrying wire perpendicular to the magnetic field, B.
