Parts of the Boat: The halyards aren’t shown in this diagram, but there is a Main Halyard and a Jib Halyard Outhaul: stretches the foot of the sail out Cunningham: pulls the luff of the sail down. Sheet: a line that controls sail movement and trim Halyard: a line that hoists (raises) a sail Outhaul Cunningham Jib Sheet Main Sheet {KU SAILING}

  6. Parts of the Boat: Centerboard: allows the boat to plane forward with the wind, as opposed to being pushed sideways by it. Rudder: changes boat direction Tiller: allows the skipper to control the rudder Tiller Rudder {KU SAILING} Centerboard

  7. Directional Terms: Bow: the front end of the boat Stern: the back end of the boat Forward: direction towards the bow Aft: direction towards the stern Bow Stern {KU SAILING} Aft Forward

  8. Windward and Leeward are directional terms only in reference to the wind Sailing Terminology: Leeward Port: left Starboard: right Windward: (closer) towards the wind Leeward: (farther) away from the wind Windward Port Starboard {KU SAILING} wind
